MS "Steve Jobs" really went out of his way to make the start menu gone.

This is the part I don't get. Metro and noStart (I'm trademarking that, btw) was available in the Windows 8 pre-releases so both the public and Microsoft as a whole were fully aware of what the OS was shaping up to be. If MS was really concerned that a single person's action (or any, for that matter) was going to jeopardize their flagship product, they wouldn't have run with it. Even the speculation around Sinofsky leaving mainly focuses on internal friction and some kind of power struggle with Ballmer (who also trusted and/or felt that Windows 8 was good enough to release w/o Start).

IMO, it can't be pinned on one guy and Sinofsky seems to be the least likely person to target. He's gone down on record for being against putting tablet features into Windows 7 and having little affinity for tablet features in general, so if he forced Metro onto Microsoft and all of us, then...?? Sinofsky is now at Harvard University so he's obviously not lurking in the shadows, tail between legs.

Metro and noStart were a Microsoft decision they felt the public would respond well to, or at least adapt to. I find it hard to believe that it came from the panic button of one senior management figure who is now probably better off after being 'let go'.

Interpreted on context, that's what it indicates. And there is more:

That Q&A alone implies (IMO) that "most" of the code was not removed.

I am asking for fact, not interpreted indications or implied opinions of yours.

If we are going to nitpick...

Where are the facts that prove that "most" of the code was removed?

Surely, you provided enough evidence for the opinion that some code was removed.

But no concrete evidence was provided for the opinion that most of the code was removed.

    Agreed.

The source of me using"most" is from http://windowswave.com/the-start-menu-code-is-still-inside-windows-8-some-of-it/ which states "some Start menu codes are still present in the explorer.exe" therefore most was removed, but does not cite references and is not concrete evidence.

    Cheers, Nick

Hey I don't care how much code was removed or what, as long as they put it back in and make future windows version usable to me again.

They could have save themselves a lot of "backlash" (term loosely used) by giving end users options. Just that alone might suffice to make people see Windows 8 in a better limelight. If what's stated on this thread is true, it just reflects that they've found the light where they were once in the dark :p

P.S. Light-hearted comment so no offense to Win8 fanboys.

I have not really read this entire thread, but I have always had a Start menu actually. It is at the top, centered. I have the option of putting it at the bottom as well.

If one wants to boot Windows 8 to the desktop, that can easily be done. I tried both and I ended up going back to the Metro. I kind of like seeing it - I guess the Windows 8 Mobile phone broke me in.

another esthetic consideration is that Microsoft has made it very hard to skin Windows 8.

Stardock still has not been able to release a Win 8 compatible version of WindowsBlinds.

and 3rd party apps like UxStyle, which use to work in Win 7 to skin the OS, don't work anymore in Win 8.

so it seems like Microsoft very much want the look of Win 8 to be locked down as much as possible.

Stardock released several products that work with Windows 8, some of them work exclusively with Windows 8.

WindowBlinds 8 is going to be a major new version, not only to support Windows 8 but to introduce several new features, etc.

I researched their forums in order to get the real info on this.

This is the relevant thread: http://forums.stardock.com/439064

Keep an eye in answers made by employees of Stardock - they have a blue "Stardock" or "Stardock Support" label.

    Such as these ones:

    well,

unfortunately, the stuff from Stardock that works with Windows 8 at this moment does not interest me.

what i'm interested in is for Stardock WindowsBlinds or some other 3rd party application to be able to patch this ugly Windows 8 as soon as possible. :p

given the length of time that Windows 8 has been available as a release candidate it is somewhat telling that Stardock has not been able to 'crack' Windows 8 yet...

and have you tried installing UxStyle on Windows 8?
Windows 8 treats it like it's some kind of rootkit or something...
totally borked the system is what it did.

Absolutely not, I would never touch my systems with any of these things.

A simple start menu is all I would install in this category, but only if the machine had no touchscreen.

However, I don't plan to use Windows 8 in machines without touchscreens.

Have you tried turning off secure boot and allowed Win 8 to boot after installing UXStyle? Once its booted correctly then turn back on secure boot.

I have an Aero theme on Windows 8 using UltraUX Theme patcher, a windows Aero theme, and WinAeroGlass. It's why I temporarily came back to Windows 8. I just don't know for how long though.

Windows just would not be windows without the iconic start orb and menu.

Depends on where you started. My first Windows experience was 3.x, which didn't have those things. I remember when they were new. :D

So, is the thread title going to get changed, or should we leave it that way as a symbol of hope?

I guess we technically can't say it's incorrect because it could happen someday.

For those struggling with Metro, have a look at this folder...

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

    It's the Win8 Start Menu.
