I must say that M$ has really done quite a good job to make Win 7/8 a lot safer.

A couple of examples:

Kernel Patch Protection (PatchGuard)
Data Execution Prevention (EMET)
Mandatory Integrity Control (Limited User Account)
Early Launch Anti-Malware (ELAM drivers)
Trusted Boot + Secure Boot
