Same here. I can find things easily now.

My test computer is only a Pentium 4 and it takes 20 seconds for the desktop to appear (sometimes faster) but it takes 40 seconds before all the tray icons have loaded. You don't know about the 40 seconds when you are using Metro as you can't see the delay in loading the tray icons.

I'm going back to Metro. It boots faster. I can get on the internet in 20 seconds as opposed to 40 seconds if I boot to the old desktop. If I click Windows Explorer as soon as Metro appears all of my tray icons are present. Oh well!!

you'll need a double layer DVD or make a bootable USB.
there are smaller versions if you don't need the Developers tools, which would fit on a regular DVD.
here's a tut to make a bootable USB key:

    Hello,

Has Microsoft set a release date for Windows 8 yet? I heard it was sometime in 2012. And does the new OS support USB 3.0?

    Regards,

    Nathan

Windows 8 will release somewhere in Q2/Q3 of 2012 yes. My USB 3.0 external HDD works perfectly, so that answers your second question ;)

I hope so yeah :D A pity that catalyst still doesn't work, can't change the power level now.

Whilst Catalyst may install I doubt the driver itself is installing. If it is it will result in a performance reduction as Windows 8 uses WDDM v1.2 where as 7 is v1.1

In summary, if you want the highest performance, I don't recommend installing them, get the special AMD win8 "engineering" drivers from windows update. Currently the "engineering" driver on Win8 will give you more performance than the standard drivers on Win7.

    Interesting. Thanks.

EDIT: The driver was installing it was 8.9. I hadn't noticed any performance issues.

I'm not saying it will have issues :p simply you're missing out on a performance boost.

Makes sense. I just wish they had an 8.9 version for Windows 8.

Open up device manager and check for updates against your display adapter using windows update, it might grab it.

Thanks funky, I'll give it a look.

EDIT: I like some of the ideas, really don't like some of the others. I think some are definitely coming anyways though.

i'll give it (Win 8 ) another try in a few weeks.
i can't afford the distractions of tweaking a new OS right now, but i'll get back to it.
