I think I agree with the first commenter. Keep the mac fanboys away from writing Windows articles, like ArsTechnica have their own specialists.

    You're welcome. :thumb:

i think he's an idiot who didn't take the .005 seconds to click the 'desktop' tile lmao

it's literally just your start menu but fullscreen

idk why people can't wrap their heads around that idea

    Hungry Man,

There are some things not present. For example, how do you find the Accessories folder from Metro? I have to go to the classic Start menu.

Not sure what that folder even is. While it is still the start menu in terms of functionality there are some clear changes, of course.

The Accessories folder contains many apps. eg Command Prompt, Calculator, etc, as well as the System Tools folder. I'm sure you can get there from Metro but I can't.

You can get to all of those simply by typing the name. It's actually faster considering how nested some of those tools were.

    i don't know folks.

once we take out Metro from the equation, which i think is a good move on Microsoft's part to standardize OS across hardware, there is very little change to this new OS.

what's new beside spell checking and a new Task Manager?
sure, there might be changes "under the hood" but i want some new stuff i can sink my teeth into. ;)

i'm seriously thinking skipping Windows 8, unless there are new upcoming some changes that i like, or even try some Linux variant.

i would hate to wait 5 years for Windows 9, only to find out it's Windows Vista Part 4.
i'm not getting any younger. ;)

I think you overlooked the spam of various threads last week detailing new features, including and not limited to: New filesystem, sandboxed applications, lower system resource usage, faster boot time, integrated AV and cloud reputation, imaging, soft system restore, hard system restore.

    Here's a list of over 300 features:

none of these features impresses me.

you mileage may vary, of course. :)

    - new file system: Protogon you mean? might be a good one. when we finally get to try it.
    - sandboxed app: for Metro Apps only, if i'm not mistaken.
    - lower system resource usage: uses a little more CPU than W7.
    - faster boot time: only relevant for battery life. Desktop users use Sleep/Hibernation
    - integrated AV and cloud reputation: ask me if i care. ;)
    - imaging, soft system restore, hard system restore: got this covered with third party imaging via IFW

It remains to be seen if WinRT is for metro only, it's doubtful.

    Not from my experience.

Wha....? Sleep/Hybernation is more common amongst laptop users, I've never used sleep/hybernation, now I have even less reason to waste power on it when bootup is so short.

Why are you browsing Wilders security forums then?

Now it's free and built in.

Must be hard to impress you when a near enough re-write of the fundamentals of Windows doesn't impress you :D

    hahaha! :D

i like change, there's just not enough of it for my taste.
i was hoping for more "in your face" changes.

and about reboot time: having to reboot twice to get a boot command prompt is not time saving for me. ;)

i'd rather use Hitman Pro and VirusTotal for this stuff.
    i don't do real-time integrated AV. ;)

I've taken a look at Win8, and if Metro gets launched with it without a way to get rid of it during install, all my home PCs will be switching over to Linux. Worst GUI I've ever seen for any OS in a long time.

Did you actually use it for more than 5 minutes? You don't even have to use the metro interface, MS has already confirmed that they will add a option to boot right into the desktop.

the Metro part is meant to be used principally with tablets, smartphones etc...
it can be disabled with some tweaks.

the Developer Preview, from what i've experienced, is 2 OS in 1 release, one for tablet and for for desktops.
    more or less...

So how many things in that list are actually new?

I'm not being a hater, trust me. But a lot of things in that big old list have been there. *Shrug* I don't know, aside from very specific things like the sandboxed apps and the ever so wonderful (if it works like it says) restore features, I'm not "wowed". I certainly see corporate skipping it, considering most of them have really just moved over to Win 7. Regular consumers will still get plenty of it, but mostly because any new system will have it by default. if they have Win 7 already, I'm not so sure there is enough there to make them pounce at 8.

There is still a very good chance 8 will flop, it's probably safe to say it's more at risk than Vista was. It remains to be seen of course, and I'm simply stating an opinion based on reading and my own experience.

I mean, yeah battery life isn't new. Duh.

But the improvements to battery life are.

Indeed, anything mentioned that is already there has been improved. With the exclusion of DirectX11 which actually has a successor (11.1).

    I agree 100% dw426 - I certainly won't be pouncing...

Once I got rid of the dire Metro (I'm on desktop), some things were a bit neater, but I'm not going to jettison 7 just yet.

How large is the download for Windows 8? Was hoping to give it a go here at work in a VM.

    Thanks.
