Yes, I managed to install it too, by using Compatibility, but it wouldn't run for me either. I can't remove it the 'normal' way from the machine, so will try manual uninstall.

Incidentally, is anyone else getting hangs - I get them continually (almost every time I try to do something) and have to reset the machine in VirtualBox, as I can't open TM to kill any processes.

    Hi J_L,
Vmware supports Windows 8, but you need Vmware Workstation V8, because Windows 8 requires ACPI 2.0. Here are some screenshots.

    Thanks,

    not a good start.

the Iso i got is only 2.01 Gb when it should be 2.8 and the Sha 1 checksum don't match anyway.

    and i burned 2 'coasters'. ;)

i'll try to download it again tomorrow.

People are still burning ISO's? Stop.

Do you have a USB stick available with the correct amount of space? If you do, use the Windows 7 USB install tool to install the ISO on the USB stick, reboot and select the USB stick in the BIOS boot menu, save+exit, then your Windows install should start directly from the stick.

Not only are you saving DVDs, but installation from USB is faster due to higher read speeds.

    tnx funky,

i just downloaded the ISO and the checksum SHA1 matches this time. ;)
i will try this tip when i get home.
i hate wasting plastic if i don't have to. :)
hopefully, my BIOS and mobo are not too old to support booting from a key.

Anyone having problems with the download? Mine gets to .1GB away, and then it stops, then my download rate goes down 1KB a second and the download never finishes.

I finally got the whole thing to download, but Virtualbox won't boot from it, even though I did exactly what I should have.

and so i have been playing with W8 for a few hours.

it took me about 30 minutes to figure out the Metro interface but it was smooth sailing after that.
i rather enjoyed it but i felt it definitely is for tablets, phones and such.
the only Metro app i was interested in was IE10.
it was quite fun to use, although i could not use my password manager.
again, strictly tablets stuff i thought.

once you switch to your regular desktop GUI it looks and feels just like W7.
IE10 feels faster and has a spell checker, the Task Manager has been rebuilt.
    but that's it.
the Firewall is still the same, so is the file manager ( although with ribbons) etc...
there are other changes for sure, like System Reset and such but they have little interest for me.

the only question i was left with was "Why?"
what's in it for us Desktop users? o_O
    actually, that's two questions. ;)

there will probably be still quite a bit of change between now and the Beta/RC but i can't see the benefit for a W7 user to switch to W8 at the moment.

it's pretty easy to use as a desktop user

the big difference is that "Start" is now a full page and way more organized/ easy to see everything

There are certainly other improvements besides the UI though

i am sure, but it seems all the love went for the tablet versions.
visually, the Desktop GUI is still the same as Vista/7.
i was hoping for some changes there.
still the same bloody Aero look.
good thing i skin my OS. ;)

there still quite a way to go and time for improvments though. :)
    we'll see...

The metro ui is not that bad, you really get used to it after a few hours. I still got a few problems that I hope will get resolved:

    1) You can only move 1 tile at a time. If you install a bunch of software, they all end up on the total right. It's a nuisance to move everything one by one, there should be a few to drag them all together at once.

    2) scrolling with the mouse wheel should be faster, it's really slow to move the interface to the left/right now (clicking the bar underneath is much faster).

    3) it's not possible to move in some metro apps with the mouse wheel.

i like the Metro GUI, but it is especially made for tablets.

i still find it more comfortable to manage this stuff from a traditional interface.

Yeah there need to be batch operations for tiles. Holding ctrl + clicking a tile should allow you to select more IMO.

I tried it and my impressions are that Metro UI doesn,t feel so comfortable for mouse but I am sure it will rock on tablets.
