The only people who matter are the users. I'll let them decide the products success when it's released.

It's nice to know that Gartner's analysts and researchers are users as well.

I take whatever an analyst says with a grain of salt. What really is a laugh is when they say a stock has a target price of so and so. If the price was worth that amount, it would already be trading at that amount. Look what all the analysts said about FB. Nobody can predict the future, including the so-called analysts. When Windows 8 comes out is when we know how successful it is.

gave it another try for the past day.

i've warmed up to Metro somewhat but even without the Metro issue i feel there is little incentive for people to switch to W8 if they are running OSes they are happy with.
there is nothing 'breakthrough' or 'must-have' here.

performance is on par with Windows 7 from my experience.

people buying new desktop or laptop machines should be fine as Metro is not bad when you get used to it.
    it's different, for sure...

I disagree there. IMO, Metro is completely inappropriate for a traditional desktop or laptop. I can't wait to see how 8 is received by the public once they start shipping new machines with it. This is going to be interesting... and fun. :)

And I disagree with you. Metro is appropriate for desktop and laptops as well.

i would not call it appropriate.
it is confusing, even for a nerd like me.
you certainly can get used to it though, it's not a deal breaker.

for instance, they are 2 versions of Windows Updates: a Metro version and the traditional desktop version.
if you search with Metro Start for Windows Updates you are dropped to the Metro version.

the Metro version is obviously meant for tablets and such but i am wondering why a desktop user need 2 versions.

anyway, like i said, even without the Metro issue there is very little exterior changes to Win 8 compared to Win 7.
there's a new Taskbar Manager and get this: the file manager has now a ribbon! lol
there might be a lot of changes 'under the hood' but still.

performance-wise i did not see much difference with Win 7.

i was considering maybe get the discounted price that M$ offers usually before a new OS release but now, i'm not so sure.

it's worth maybe 5 or 10$ in my opinion for Win7 and Vista desktop\laptop users. lol

Regular users aren't even supposed to launch "Windows update" or whatever. The process has been improved to be as transparent and automatic as possible (with less reboots too). All Metro apps, for example, get auto-update.

Not if they don't have touch screens... and most of them don't.

Can you accept that I personally don't agree with your opinion? See here and here for reasons to think that W8 is just as well or better suited to mouses and keyboards too.

I think there's a better question guest. Can you accept the fact that he doesn't agree with you?

Of course I can. But he keeps replying to my posts, he keeps stating the same thing he already stated several times in this thread, without elaborating. Do you want to see a list of links to his posts containing exactly the same point?

    anyway,

if i had to leave XP or older then i would go for Win 8.
same thing if i was to get a new computer.
Linux Mint Maya is also a very good option.

Metro is not really a big issue once you get used to it.
i just wish the tablet and desktop GUI were more dissociated.

W8 is supposed to include a quick video tutorial in the final version.
it's a wise move i think because the Metro experience is jarring, to say the least, to a new user.
