Yes, I fear you are quite correct.

Probably because most of the people who complained are running Mac or Ubuntu by then LOL!

I wiped my desktop drives and set up a dual boot with the latest Release Preview. The built in flash works with Enhanced Protected Mode which alone was worthwhile the upgrade.

Reminds me that a few months ago the rumors were flying that Mac OS was going to be replaced with iOS on all apple devices. Mac Pros were going to be dropped and Macbooks and iMacs would have iOS. Nobody ridiculed the idea of Apple using a mobile OS on desktop devices. Time will tell what people will buy, but I have know a lot of them that went Macbook when Vista was released and are back to Windows 7 now. May the best product win. Seriously. :thumb:

You need special hardware for secureboot to work. I personally am dual booting but don't have secureboot because of my BIOS.

Yes, but that's just it, isn't it? The best product doesn't always win. ;)

I hope they change their mind later and enable a way to permanently disable Metro. :thumbd: :thumbd: :isay:

I've been running Win 8 CP and really liked how they set up Parental Controls. I could export/import a list of sites allowed, but with the Release Preview, MS removed the export/import feature. :thumbd:

When I set up Win 8 I normally get rid of all metro apps and replace with desktop apps, So far I've been fine with it. However, MS's refusal to provide new customization options to desktop users is wearing on me.

If feels similar to Mayor Bloomberg prohibiting large sugar drinks because "its not good for you." Unless MS shows more love to the desktop I'm voting "No" and passing on this OS.

I do believe the purchase of Win 8 is a vote against the desktop. :argh:

I think they were supposed to be doing something with Parental Controls? I can't remember but somehow they were making them better, maybe it didn't reach this version. I've never used them myself to know.

Personally what I do and recommend is to view the new Start Screen as a launch pad. It may be a work environment on the tablet but it certainly is not on the desktop.

Remove all apps that don't have live tile functionality, and keep the ones you find remotely useful, e.g. weather & calendar. These are the ones you can use as Vista-like widgets, where all you need to do is open the Start Menu, look at it, and close it. You can do all that and never have to launch into the full screen app (other than the first time to add your zone).

After that you should have a lot of free space (I'd bet the average user will only want 2-3 live apps on display), use the rest of the space for desktop apps. This way, you shouldn't need to scroll the menu unless you have an extreme amount of desktop apps.

The "hard" part is cleaning up all the rubbish that desktop apps add, such as shortcuts to help files. This should improve in time as 3rd party programs are updated to not add such entries.

At least, that's how I handle it, and that advice seems to help others handle it.

What is Wrong With Metro and Windows 8?

    A pretty in depth review.

    This caught me by surprise.
Edit: Does this mean you cannot install a desktop app without going through the store? If so, No Thanks.

Yes, this is a good analysis. I'm only about 1/3 through it at the moment, but it has already mentioned a number of problems I experience with Win 8, such as using the mouse to hunt for the charms menu. All the issues add up to crazy making stuff. If I were not using Winstep Extreme to replace the Windows taskbar and Start menu the UI would be intolerable.

Windows 7 is beautiful I could stay on it for a LONG time. As for windows 8 I just hate how everything is built for the tablet I hate a good large portion of all of the features involved it's just maddening really. I honestly just want UEFI Support, New Task Manager (I could go without I use System Explorer anyways), and better performance and stability.

I'll skip it like vista thanks.

MS eventually fixed Vista though. I just hope that they 'fix' Win 8 sometime in the future. ;)

    At least.

EDIT: Reading the comments to this (few months old) slide show it's still difficult to predict how this OS will sell for MS. I still honestly have no idea. It could be a phenomenal success. It could be a spectacular failure. It still seems 50/50. People seem to either love it or hate it, with very little in-between. Not unlike Marmite.

They did fix Vista but the only real issues with Vista were lack of any decent drivers on release and some annoying little bugs that SP1 took care of. Windows 8 likely won't have those issues. The new interface is the gripe here for those that don't like it, and there is no fixing that. "Fixes" will more likely be achieved by installing 3rd party solutions like Classic Shell or whatever companies like Stardock end up releasing for it. MS is not going to backpedal at this stage.

True, but we don't really know what the eventual plan is for Metro. Is it going to take over and become the defacto standard for Windows (so that Windows 9 could have no desktop), or will the dual interface model continue in future versions? What kind of support is Metro going to get? I expect something major like a web browser or a popular antivirus to get a Metro version, but what about less common stuff like AnyDVD HD, Exact Audio Copy, Imgburn, etc.? A lot of this remains to be seen.

I would really prefer to use one or the other instead of switching back and forth.
