On the other hand when you're not a monopoly you're too scared to try and making sweeping advancements, even if they fail, because loosing market share could break you. There's a reason Microsoft dubbed 8 as a "risky move".

One company's 'sweeping advancements' are another's Sinclair C5. Being a monopoly (or hegemony) shouldn't give you the right to inflict the failures that 'sweeping advancements' can bring as well. Don't kid yourself that this isn't a marketing exercise, even if there are improvements.

Even? It's risky all right. Bordering risqué if you ask me LOL!

I don't think that Vista was ever actually envisaged as transitional. It was an accident of fate (if you want to call it that) that torpedoed Vista quite early in its career & forced M$ to redesign & release Win 7. Both are being supported for the same length of time.

A “real” user proves Windows 8 fails on the desktop

I was reading around the internet and youtube, and came across this by lockergnome... thought it sums up winblows 8 perfectly.
Enjoy, I know I did. It's almost painful to watch, but worth every second.

If you read a lot of comments from the average PC user (someone who doesn't visit tech websites and stuff) then you see that they simply don't like Windows 8 on desktops. However, on a tablet device they seem to like it.

And heres a video of the same guy in the video you posted saying he kind of likes Windows 8 on a tablet:

You took the time to search for this yet didn't take the time to find out that Windows 8 will have tutorials..?

Yeah, that's what everyone who shells out a lot of wonga on a new computer wants ...to go back to school.

I didn't need tutorials changing from XP to Vista. Vista/7 is quite intuitive.

    What a turkey Win 8 is! o_O

XP to Vista wasn't a major UI change... Also, Windows 8 is pretty easy to grasp, the tutorials are for the pops.

I guess you don't remember anything before XP then.

XP to Vista definitely felt like a major UI change to me.

I'm still having a hard time being impressed with 8. I don't personally run it now, but have used it over the course of a good while now on other machines. There's a decent performance boost, I'll give it that. But nothing so wonderful it screams "spend close to 200 dollars on me!". I still detest the UI, the security features, like all Windows versions will be bypassed. There's just nothing there that I see that warrants replacing a very good performing, solid release like 7 with. Jumping from XP to 8 would be a no brainer in my book. But if you're already on 7, I don't see a huge enough deal.

Definitely. If I remember correctly, I read about Vista before I bought a computer with it installed on. It had very good reviews in both the British press & various PC journals. I'm pretty sure that the major bugs had been fixed before it got here. I believe I read about these problems in some of these magazines at the time. Almost everyone who reviewed Vista commented on how different the UI was to XP & previous versions. It was regularly described as being an aesthetically very pleasant UI overall & simpler & more intuitive to use than XP. Which I agree with.

I'm pretty convinced the vast majority of Win 8 users will acquire it through the purchasing of new computers. There is no way I'm upgrading my Win 7 PC!

I think some of the improvements like faster boot time and so on are nice. But honestly, Metro just doesn't belong on a desktop or laptop. And yet MS is going to stubbornly force it on them. Big mistake IMO. But I'm sure there's no stopping it now.

Tutorials are fine, for those who want to spend the time reading them. I don't think most people will want to. Most people want to jump on their computer and go. No hassles. The new UI thwarts that to some extent.

Anyway, I think MS is going to find things out the hard way on this one. It's not going to be pretty. And yes, I think a lot of people just might decide it's time to buy a Mac now when they walk into a store like Best Buy and start playing with 8.

I'm not questioning your entitlement to opinions, I'm just asking for a different focus now that the Release Preview was released.

Let's objectively focus on the features, shall we? Let's download the preview and test it, and then report back our findings, shall we?

I tried to hit each of the main security features. I think EAF is now implemented in Windows 8 but I can't find anything on if that's the case so I left it out.

The RP seemed as good a time as any for this.

Sure, we can try that, no problem there. But you can't squelch or erase some of the negativity that's going to surround 8 from now on.. It's a fact of life. You might as well get used to it.

Great blog post, Hungry :thumb: The one thing people should keep in mind regarding Flash being built in, is that MS is going to be very selective about the websites it will run on. Not a gargantuan, household name like Youtube? You'll have to switch to the "old fashioned" desktop.

Thanks dw. Is MS only allowing flash on a whitelist basis? I hadn't read about that.
