I wouldn't recommend both at the same time:

"For Windows users that have OpenOffice.org installed, we advise uninstalling that beforehand, because it registers the same file type associations."

Yeah, not for the want of trying though! :p

It's typical that the vendors want their own product to be the default so that documents will open in their apps. The matter of file associations is a rather thin reason to recommend that that other apps be uninstalled.

Unfortunately, that's still far from being the solution. Even with third-party apps, such as ViStart. We can't forget that millions of users have their O.S in a language other than English. I gave a quick look at ViStart and it's provided in English only?

Not to mention that we'd be adding third-party code, which will never be as perfect as the native Start Menu. I remember using it on a relative's system, when she was using Windows XP. It was very buggy.

    :(

OA is not compatible with Windows 8.....yet.

I gather it is being worked on so it can be compatible at the same time as Win 8 is officially released.

Just installed in vbox on linux host. Mammoth download but I can only find a few bundled apps, like Paint, Word and a couple more. Is that all ? If so it would be a tremendous hassle getting Office and other stuff. With linux it's all there ! The install was smooth and surprisingly fast. I also don't yet understand this business of getting a mail account with Microsoft. Sorry but I have reverted to Windows newbie after over 4 years without Windows.
(I am not intersted in all that social media stuff).

Creating an account enables access to "live" services. This is akin to a smartphone, where there is a lot of integration of social media services. I'm also not interested in a strong social media focus on the desktop.

What else are you expecting to be bundled with it? Office has never been bundled with Windows. If you're talking about Metro apps you can open the store and download whatever you want.

Well it's not a mail account, it's a "Microsoft account" (formerly live account). You can use any email address you want to create a Microsoft/live account. If you have a Hotmail/SkyDrive/etc account you already have a Microsoft/live account.

The advantages of this is syncing of various settings, favourites, etc. Change your wallpaper or a favourite on 1 PC, and it's waiting for you on the next. It also allows you to keep track of app purchases so you can use your apps anywhere.

You can easily uninstall the "social" apps by right clicking them.

    It's not social media - it's just a sync.

How about it's Microsoft services centric? I'm surprised there haven't been strong objections along the lines of "antitrust". Considering all the fuss that was made about IE being pre-installed I would think this would really set people off.

Simply disabling Defender's protection/services from its options is sufficient (if the AV doesn't do it automatically during install).

And a word of warning on Kaspersky's so called "Technical/Technology Preview" for W8: it's a highly unstable Beta and not recommended to be installed on systems by people simply searching for a compatible AV. So, avoid it at least for now, until a few builds later it becomes a bit more stable (and even then, install only if you must :p).

I don't know what's the case with other AVs mentioned above.

Edit: avast! latest build is also compatible with Win8 CP.

All Emisoft products (apart from Online Armor) are compatible with Windows 8.

Malwarebytes works fine and so does Opera browser.

    http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/10/2860084/windows-8-metro-style-web-browsers-firefox

Looks like Microsoft's "walled garden" gets worse and worse each day, *cough*

Is it really that complex/annoying to remove Metro?
I though you could change it to desktop mode whenever you wanted and you could select desktop mode as default, am i wrong?

If it is really that annoying to remove Metro the Microsoft really S#%KS.

Please Microsoft should understand that a desktop with NO TOUCHSREEN (Which is most computers) does not goes along with Metro.

OK, I've unpinned all of MS metro apps and created my own blocks of tiles, plus found out that Parental Controls doesn't need Family Safety from Windows Live, so I'm back to appreciating Win 8 CP's potential. I just wish MS would have presented Metro differently to first time users. There's all kind of tweaking that can be done to make me warm up to CP. What a roller coaster ride at my house.

MS should have focused more on the personal customization side rather than the boatload of confusing apps and loud tiles.

Deja Vu all over again, and again, and so on............

$MS IMO needs to "split" off entirely their O/S models. This ridiculous right-of-passage demand it places on software developers & users (customers) alike on every new version is nothing short of dizzying o_O

OK, in Win 8 we now have Metro, gee whiz. Really a world-first (Not). Maybe for them. Touch screen? We all grown accustomed to our desktop remote control (mouse) to interact with the visual screen objects. Personally i always preferred a ball to a slide finger control on laptops, but that's water under the bridge now.

IE9 browser can't work on Win XP, yet Opera, Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox work great. Microsoft of course doesn't appear particularly concerned with nearly outdated XP users, since they already milked that cow. "Hello software developers."

Yesterday it was Vista, today it's Windows 7, soon will be Windows 8, next it will be another, and then another, and yet another & so on.

In due time Win 8 will also become irrelevant.

This smells of disposable lighters analogy to make a good comparison. Why in the world they don't simply rebuild/renew "known" stable Windows versions (XP comes to mind) and Windows 7 perhaps and keep those models relevant and forego what is destined to prove out to be more "try this new one and dismiss the early ones"

I agree with the above poster though. Personal customization and simplicity ease of use should be the priority of the day.

Looks really awesome? My XP's look even better after applying a few customizations here & there. The net is full of windows customize sites and some very engenious application developers. Does "Vistamizer" ring a bell?

My point is a simple one. Many like myself sat it out with XP while vista & Windows 7 ran it's course. Look at the very short span between XP & Windows 8 upcoming. The question is does the Windows 8 look any better then say Windows 7 or a customized 4 on the floor XP?

....since this a topic title on looks, i seen it but not impressed. Thanks
