Actually I think they have because I tried to use the registry setting that worked on the Developers Preview and it did nothing.

I showed this to some co-workers and the reaction was "We don't have to switch to that, do we?" I like some things about it and some I don't. Overall I am not sold on it. :doubt:

So, Metro look is all there will be? WTH o_O

I see I'm going to stick with Windows 7 for a long time... as long as I can, and meanwhile I will focus my attentions to Linux again. The last time was back in the Windows 98 days. :D I wasn't very keen of the killl switch either... so... :ouch:

Windows 8 can be as fast as a cheetah, but if I don't get to use the Windows 7ish look, then it's no good to me. I loathe the metro style; it would be fine in a smartphone/tablet, but not in a laptop or desktop. Not to me, anyway. For someone who likes an empty Desktop area to work, the Metro desktop would be something to make me consider some drastic action... I don't get along with closed and/or saturated places... o_O

    it's no use to me.

even the regular Start button in W7 i very rarely use.
i use it to manually check for Windows Updates. that's about it

    they're lying! :D

when i can switch that big blue IE icon back to a Start button then we can talk about compromise.
or even better better, i want to have the option of disabling Metro entirely since it gets in my way.

until then, i'm not buying. lol

Everything's been pretty smooth here so far. All my apps work ok, but when installing Live Mail 2011, it needed some .NET 3.5 files that weren't on the system by default. Otherwise, all seems well enough. I want to give it some time, and see if I can get used to the new arrangement... if all goes well, I'll keep it.

First impressions...not exactly in love with it. Don't like that Metro "carry-on" at all...it's not for me, but guess some (more sociable?) folks might like it.
Took me a little while to work out some basic things like open Control Panel, reboot etc. but then I never bothered to read up before using, but things didn't seem too obvious, as I believe they should be.
Don't think the antimalware module installed, and have an error there to investigate. SmartScreen didn't like Pale Moon and System Ninja, which didn't impress.
Overall seems to be "Metro-orientated", but OS nice and fast and responsive.
Willing to give it a chance, and see how it feels after a few weeks...
    The jury's out.

    • Reader app is very sleek, no longer need to install a PDF reader. Sandboxed and secure whilst not missing any critical options. :)
    • Mail app needs worked on a lot, missing too much that web services provide. But it's nice that it works with multiple accounts (GMail, Exchange, etc)
    • Music & Video apps... not available in my region yet.. fail. At least they play files on my disk.
    • SkyDrive app, very nice, could play my music directly from it. Select the music files and they open up the music app and play. No need for copying music on my various devices anymore.
    • Calendar app is one of those great apps you don't need to open, just a glance at the start screen and I know it's a friends birthday tomorrow.

If you have the "Antimalware Service Executable" running in the task manager, you're fine. I didn't need to change anything, installed by default. RAM usage has also halved from ~100MB to ~50MB since dev preview.

It won't like any unpopular/unsigned files. Just click Run anyway, or if you're getting the system dialog, click "More info" which gives you the run option. Selecting run means you're contributing to that applications reputation.

i am sure it would be great on tablets, blueberrys and whatnots.

on a desktop machine, two questions kept repeating over and over in my mind:
    "WTF?" and "Why?"
    :D

Forgot the weather app, another one of those great apps you don't need to open and can just glance at. Except for the part where they forgot that Celsius exists... something that hasn't been fixed since the dev preview. Facepalm.

Gonna try out some of the apps and games on the store another time.

I wish I had known that so I wouldn't have installed Adobe Reader... I always install it out of habit on a new setup. haha.. Oh well.

I like the weather and calendar apps also... handy.

lol so strange. It must just be me but I really love metro. I'm using some of the apps right now - really easy to use. Easy to move between metro and desktop.

Have you tried just playing around with it?

Move your mouse to different corners, try to figure things out. It's very intuitive.

That was my initial reaction too, when I installed the DP a few weeks ago. But somehow since then, and now with the CP, it has really grown on me and I like it a lot.

I'm pretty excited to have more apps. I can see this working very well for me.

EDIT: I think having used the DP for so long I got used to a somewhat gimped metro. Moving to this (much much much) improved version really helps.

OK, I've been working with it since this afternoon, and Win 8 CP may be wearing me down. Went back to Win 7 for an hour and it was nice.

One thing I noticed is it comes with AV and AS installed - Windows Defender is doing double duty. They must have renamed MSE...?

Yes, I'm running the 32 bit version in Virtual Box - working just fine. I burned the ISO to a DVD and installed using the Vbox wizard.

Well actually we can still keep the Windows 7 Design, according to what they said we can sort of minimize the "Ribbon Toolbar" which ends up looking almost identical to Windows 7 so theres still hope :D

Has anyone installed this on a Dell laptop? I have a Dell Inspiron and want to make sure all the hardware (wifi, camera etc) will work.

I doubt I will ever really like Metro (fullscreen apps are a waste of space no matter how MS tries to justify it) but it seems I have no choice.

Well, put Win8 to hibernate last night only to find it turned on in the morning.
Turns out "Allow wake timers" found it suitable to turn my PC back on in 3 in the morning to do something (I guess maintenance...). Ugh. Edit2: I turned off "Allow scheduled maintenance to wake my computer..." option in Automatic maintenance beforehand, yet it turned on my PC. Or, I guess it's a coincidence that it's scheduled at the same time my PC turned on and it's something else. I've disabled "Allow wake timers" in power options and will see how it behaves now.

As for the Start... menu or whatsitcalled, I'm not impressed.
How do you permanently switch to All apps view? (I can't find the option)

Edit: heh, it seems I broke something, I cant access Start>settings> more PC settings. Nothing happens when I click it. Worked fine before. Betas will be betas I guess. :)
