Why would you disable services? A lot of them including the Windows Update service are now Start on Demand. They will start when asked and the stop when done. I have never had to disable a service apart from Windows Search, even in 7.

Security of course, services, especially network related, have regularly some vulnerabilities. Workarounds always confirm, that disabling them prevents their exploitation.

Disabling used/useful services "just-in-case" isn't security. With that regard you might aswell disable absolutely everything that might get exploited. You've always needed to balance functionality with security. If you're worried about local network security, use the "public" firewall mode?

Well they are not usefull for me, everything worked just fine, untill 8, and since I use no realtime security like firewall or AV, I prefer "passive" protection, like disabled services.

I literally never print from my computer therefor I disabled the printer spooler service.

    1) I don't need it so it shouldn't be there for performance reasons
    2) It's been exploited before I believe

Network registry I disabled. I disable what I know I'll never use.

Part of that's performance and, yes, part of that is security.

I disable the Windows Search service as I have no use for it, just as you have no use for the Print Spooler, nothing to do with security. Not seeing network registry anywhere, sounds like a service that would be in the Enterprise/Ultimate version.

All I'm saying is, there's no point disabling things that might be useful (or in this case used by a useful service) "just incase" an exploit crops up. Especially when they are usually local LAN or local machine exploits.

I'm on Ultimate. There's a network registry in every version though but it may be called something else. Same with uhhhh Computer Browser or whatever, useless for me.

Yes, most service exploits are local exploits. But if you never need a service AND that service is exploitable why would you leave it running? If you might possibly use it in the future... sure... leave it. But otherwise? Why bother leaving it on?

That post has blown me away, I'm going to need to dedicate an hour or so when I have it, just to read the entire thing. It's quite obvious they haven't just changed the start screen "on a whim".

Ow I quite like that. I think I'd like the current metro start screen better if it wasn't full screen though, a windows within the desktop, about 95% size or so.

Why? It steals the screen from other pages one way or another, if you hit the windows key in 7 or 8 you're still stuck with it in front of everything else. May as well expand it and get some more use out of it.
