Edit re: gpu? Yes, I made sure I'm fully up to date for the tests. Neither win7 or win8 are good for this kind of host, but the responsiveness with metro is really a noticeable notch down from stock 7 with aero.

    How?

I mean, I would bet that if you did some kinda screen switching thing with 7 it would be just as slow if not slower, the only difference would be that with 7 you don't have anything like that.

Just got this installed today finally had the time to troubleshoot. Too bad its in a vm cos its really slow lol.

Question. What AV software are you guys running with this? Are there any that are compatible with 8? Or do you run it in compatibility mode etc?

Any tips or tricks would be cool.

    Thanks.

Windows Defender (MSE) runs by default, that's what I'm using.

Cool thanks man. I may try to load up a free av for the helluva it. Will scope out defender.

Type defender into control panel to open up the options.

Not running any AV software/ anything other than EMET.

Don't try to use any security software like Comodo or Sandboxie. Anything that uses kernel hooks will break Win8.

Yeah already opened it, changed options and ran a scan. Thanks man.

Good to know. I may just try Avira or Avast for the heck of it. Thanks for the tip!!!

The only other incompatible software I've found is Minecraft, that'll BSOD the machine quickly.

Otherwise everything I've used has worked.

    i guess that's good news.
if AV programs can't hook the kernel it'll hopefully be immune to malware as well...

I don't know about you folks, but something that I wish that Windows 8 could have, in the classic Desktop, is a Fences-like feature.

Yes, I could get Fences itself, but nothing beats native features, IMO. And, the less alien code the better, right? ;)

I suppose we won't see it coming, though... lol

Reducing runtime memory in Windows 8

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/10/07/reducing-runtime-memory-in-windows-8.aspx

Nice to see it running on a first generation ATOM netbook. I like the fact that Windows Defender (MSE) has been built to take advantage of some of the new features like low priority memory flags.

Running is one thing, responsiveness is the most important human factor in the interactive usage. Anything above 150ms, and it's doomed.

Manual has to be user initiated I believe.

    My understanding was like this:

    1) Disabled - Service can't start period.
    2) Manual - Service can be started when needed by other services (or by user), etc. (on demand so to speak).
    3) Automatic - Service loads/starts when Windows starts up etc...

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I always thought it worked.

Kerodo, you're right. Start on Demand is similar to Manual but with a difference, it is shut down when no longer needed. This is all very well described in the blog post I linked.

I am running 8 as a primary system and so far I am very satisfied. Memory footprint it ~80MB less, only ~270MB in comparison to 7, where it was ~350MB. Responsives is a way higher than in 7, where I had to wait for UAC prompts for ~5 sec, in 8 it jumps right away. Well it really feels faster and smoother, just like good old XP. But there is one annoying bug, Windows Updates has high services requirements. I have everything disabled, so Windows assumes, that there is no internet and in order to get WU working, I have to enable all network services and they require DHCP running, what a silly mistake, 7 worked just fine without it, so I just hope, that they will fix it, untill final comes out.
