Java or Minecraft... one of them causes a BSOD lol I have no idea why. I'm trying compatibility mode on Java hoping that fixes it.

Lol, I'm placing my bet on Minecraft. I'm really surprised at what all still does work on 8 though. I've said it before, I know, but they have got to do something else with that blue screen.

I dislike the new blue screen. It's so rare that they occur and the info on them used to be pretty helpful.

Is that a BSOD? I haven't been "lucky" enough to see one yet.

Just play minecraft for a few minutes! haha

it's basically a big sad face and "Windows has to restart"

I'm not even sure if it gives the code, haven't looked... it might actually. If that's the case I Really don't care what UI changes they give it.

You're still given things like "System Service Exception", but a Google on that is likely to be an exercise compared to stop errors with specific number codes.

Ah, no number codes? I was hoping that had stayed. I am trying to avoid BSOD'ing haha after I get one I have to restart multiple times until it lets me log in again =p

No number codes that I've seen thus far. I can appreciate simplifying the archaic codes, but stripping away too much leaves little to go on. Give me a stop error, I can pin it down in Google pretty quickly (usually). Give me things like I mentioned earlier with System Service Exception, and answers are all over the place. As far as the restarting multiple times to get back in, that's what you get for agreeing to be Microsoft's guinea pig :D

Can't you get the detailed information in dump files?

If you're BSODing before you start up can you access those?

Boot into last known good configuration, system recovery options, or Safe Mode. If necessary, use a Linux LiveCD or Windows PE.

Yeah I've tried re-downloading, not sure whats up.

Will give it a go again later today or later in the week. If I am unable to get it going I will wait until beta to try it.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Running as admin is pretty much the same as in 7. Right click, run as admin.

Hungry, did you manage to get Java working on Win8? I've installed the 64bit version and it seems to have installed fine and is definitely enabled. But for some reason, it won't launch when it comes across a Java based site.

edit: Seems the only solution was to install 32bit Java and use 32bit IE on the laptop and it worked. Does anyone have a better solution? Maybe one that involves making the 64bit Java work. :D
