I think you'd be better off waiting until beta.

I agree. The beta will hopefully include the new filesystem as well.

    Hi Trooper,
Why would you need a DVD or a USB if you are installing it in a VM. Just straight away boot the VM from the ISO.

    Cheers!

    too late for that.
did i mention i'm a sucker for this kinda stuff? ;)

so, errr, i decided to reinstall Win8 tonight while the food was cooking.
this time i decided that instead of installing on another partition like i did the first time i just would overwrite Win7.

i launched the install from the W7 desktop, hoping i would be able to keep some programs, maybe the wallpaper. ;)
everything works from what i can tell like it was in W7.

the geek in me was impressed to no ends.
the cynical part of me said: "stop smiling you fool, it's just Windows 7 with an extra skin." ;)

Honestly, moving from Windows 7 to Windows 8 is almost as big as moving from Windows XP to Windows 7.

The changes are drastic and resounding and they're most certainly not limited to the UI.

    of course Hungry.

i was hoping for a new file manager, maybe dual pane, a new easy way to configure outbound connection with the Firewall, the new GUI/interface i've been dreaming about for people half android/half human. ;)

and something else than bloody Aero! :argh:

They may allow us to upgrade to Protogon without reformatting. I think they've done that before.

Yes back in the day of FAT32 > NTFS WinXP conversions. But it is a beta so why not go with a clean slate.

Oh I agree. I haven't put anything (well, very little) on this computer because I plan to reformat.

Yeah I still have all my stuff on a bunch of externals as I figured I might be doing this a few times before Win8 releases, so it didn't make sense to remove those backups yet.

Then again with this new "Windows Update" tactic we may get pushed straight into beta. (I'll probably still wipe though :p)

If moving to beta is as easy as windows update I'll probably try it out before reformatting.

    well,

everything froze solid while using W8, of course, there still is some stability issues.

i restored an image and back to W7.

i'll give it another look when the Beta comes out.

    That would be nice...
Microsoft will keep Windows 8 activated after the beta testing is over? Or we are just guinea pigs? lol

PS: Any tip so i can safely disable Metro and have a start menu as shown here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=308283 ?

You will almost certainly have to buy it, though there will be a "grace period" probably for a month.

My tip would be to get used to Metro.

Obviously you will have to buy the release, we're talking about the preview/beta/RC.

For those of us that participated in testing Win7 you'll remember that the RC was valid for 13 months, not 1 month. Vista RC was 9 months.

That's a great point. Unfortunately I tried that and it does not want to boot. Do I need to do anything to the iso file after downloading it in order to boot from it to install Windows 8 into a virtual machine?

    Hi Trooper,
It seems you are using Vmware player. Windows 8 won't install in player as it requires ACPI 2.0, why don't you use virtualbox? I am using Vmware Workstation 8 and I boot the vm directly from the iso, you don't need to do anything special.

One more thing, are you trying to install the 32bit or 64 bit edition? You can try installing the 32bit version, it might work. Here try this link http://www.mywindowsclub.com/resources/5081-Install-Windows-VMWare-Workstation.aspx

    Thanks,
    Ziaul

I have actually downloaded a free trial of vmware workstation. Got a little further, but now it says it needs a cd or usb driver and there seems to be now way to get out of it, any help?

Or should I just try the 32 bit version (lame but will if it will work better).

Thanks for your help and advice!

EDIT: Nope 32 bit does not install either, same error. What gives?

This is the error I get with Virtual Box

    Hi Trooper,
That error you are getting is from VBox and what about vmware? In vmware workstation 8 it should work straight of the bat, you don't need to make any changes. I just need to confirm one thing, does your processor support Hardware Virtualization? If not, it won't work.
