As long as Classic Shell works, they can update the metro if they want... Classic shell makes Windows 8 to what it should´ve been. What I dont get into my head is why MS wont let the user decide what GUI to use on a PC. Where is the shame in offering freedom? Surely they didnt think that PC users would love to have a tablet interface?

the thing that irritated me the most when i started trying Windows 8 was when you tried to open an image or PDF document it would open a Metro app for that.

this new feature fixes that and it should make life easier for newbies.
but it should have been there from the beginning, afaic.

No problem here with the update.

I do agree that the features they have added may make it better for people using it for the first time.

Strange. What happens if someone buys a Windows 8.1 computer after May 13?

It also means that all 8.1 backups that don´t include the Update will be useless after May 13.

I suspect that Windows Update will present them with this update and no more until you install it.

Yes. I had interpreted it in the sense that the Update wouldn´t be available after May.

So what's with the Store being pinned to the Taskbar after the update installation, and anything else you open stays open in the taskbar until you choose to close it :O

i think they pinned the Store to the Taskbar to encourage people to use it.
    it is easily unpinned.

anything else you open stays open in the Taskbar until you close it.
it's always been like that since Windows 95.

    unless you meant something else.

I cant say I'm pleased with the way everything remains open in the taskbar regardless of clicking close .. for example Control panel windows explorer and basically everything else, until you click close in the taskbar itself.

However jumping straight to desktop after logging on is a +

i don't have the problem you describe with stuff staying open in the Taskbar.
are you using the Metro Apps or the desktop apps?

jumping straight to the Desktop after loggin was already available since 8.1 but it was not the default setting.
another thing that should have been included from the start.

it seems like Microsoft is fixing mistakes that did not need to be there in the first place.
    oh well. ;)

Right click the Taskbar and select Properties – you'll see the following new option (highlighted below) which you are free to select/deselect:
After the Update _____ Before the Update (for comparison)

I'm not seeing this either. Are you running any kind of shell enhancement/replacement that might be causing this?

You are happy with XP, great, I prefer Vista (I have XP on 3 machines).
. Why are you sorry? Because I like metro and you don't? Dictionary definition of"fluff": something of no consequence. Your statement is pure "fluff" as we are talking about taste which is always subjective.

Are you running any Stardock software? I had seen a post on their forum that implied that outdated versions of ModernMix would do something similar.

My statement is pure fluff? Really?

As a Desktop user and a User of applications like Cinema 4D, Adobe CS and Corel Draw, I can say that 8 is a huge step back. In order for it to gain the usefulness I had in 7, I need to use a 3rd party app just to turn off some of the nonsense that I will never use but keeps popping up since I have no use or need for the the dumbed down, non drag and drop enabled Windows 8 "Metro" Modern UI, Apps. Skydrive and Mail through a browser makes the usability of the Metro versions seem like a bad joke. The hot corners while using Multiple monitors gets real old real fast.
Try making the desktop Theme black.. all of a sudden, min/max/close gets washed out and forget the titles..... they are gone and then you get this nappy gray for the out of focus windows. I don't want fruity colors and non Windows 8 apps in the new Start look horrific. So much wasted space. MS could have given us an option if we were not on a tablet, touch screen LCD or all in one PC. There are no all in one PC's that can match the power of my computer for speed which I need for rendering and with no use for the "Metro" Apps, touch is not even a thought.
