At the Surface event in New York City, Microsoft announced Windows 10X, a new version of Windows 10 designed for dual-screen folding-screen devices.

Windows 10X is not finished yet and it will be launched to enable unique experiences on multi-screen and dual-screen PCs from various hardware manufacturers. Windows 10X has been designed with both professionals and consumers in mind. Dual-Screen hardware with Windows 10 could allow businesses to view multiple charts and data at the same time to study the complex nature of their business and the current market trends.

Microsoft plans on having Windows 10 available in the fall of 2020 to be ready for the holiday season.

Neowin: Microsoft announces Windows 10X, its new OS for foldable and dual-screen PCs

Coming in the holiday season of 2020, rumors of Windows 10X have been around since last year, although we knew it as Windows Lite. As expected, it's based on Windows Core OS, which modularizes different components of the operating system.
At first, all Windows 10X devices will be Intel-based, and you won't have the opportunity to bring an existing device over to X mode. This is only for new dual-screen and foldable PCs.

Windows 10X is designed to be modern, so it doesn't have some of the same limitations that Windows 10 proper has. It should update seamlessly in the background, something that Windows has always struggled with. One thing we weren't sure about is if Windows Lite would be able to run Win32 apps, and it turns out that it will, but they will run in containers.

Microsoft is scrapping its Live Tiles, the animated and flipping icons from the Windows Phone days, in favor of a more simplified look. The Windows 10X Start Menu includes apps you can pin in place and a list of recent documents. It looks like more of a task launcher than what exists in Windows 10 today.
It’s not clear whether the regular version of Windows 10 will also be updated to include some of these Windows 10X Start Menu changes, but it’s obvious that Microsoft doesn’t see Live Tiles as part of its Windows future anymore.

According to people familiar with the development, Windows 10X (Windows Core OS) as a whole is not just for dual-screen and foldable devices. Windows 10X uses an adaptive shell codenamed Santorini and same shell be will be used across different form factors.

Microsoft is working on a new project codenamed Pegasus to bring Windows 10X’s unique user interface to traditional laptop form factors and different styles of laptops or tablets.
With Project Pegasus, Microsoft could be rebuilding the desktop experience with modern code and the same Windows 10X experience will be tailored for traditional form factors.

Windows 10X or Project Pegasus will not replace the current Windows 10 experience and new user interface will ship only on new devices.

Leaked internal Microsoft documentation has revealed new details around Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10X operating system announced earlier this month for foldable PCs.
The documentation reveals minor details around some of the user experience changes and enhancements you can expect to see on Windows 10X, and also confirms what I've been hearing about how Windows 10X will also be made available for laptops in addition to foldables.

The internal documentaion also reveals the name of the new Start menu, which Microsoft is now calling the "Launcher" on Windows 10X: This is similar language to what's found on Android. The new Launcher features a search bar that searches the device locally as well as OneDrive, and below that is a grid of installed apps and websites.
The documentation makes brief mention of a new modern File Explorer, something we've known about beening in the works for Windows Core OS devices for some time.

As it turns out, Microsoft might be working on something new. According to a job listing on LinkedIn (spotted by Windows Latest), Microsoft is looking for an engineer to help build its new IoT OS, which will be based on Windows 10X.

Specifically, the listing reads, "You will build the next generation IoT operating system based on Windows 10X." It's more likely that rather than Windows 10X, the company is talking about Windows Core OS, which is the sort of backbone behind Windows 10X, the OS that's going to run on the Surface Neo and other dual-screen devices.

An IoT variant would be a different version of Windows Core OS, or something with a different shell if it even has a shell at all. In fact, this strategy is what you'd expect from Windows 10 IoT Core.
Naturally, there's no clue as to when this will ship, since it's something that's still in development.
Maybe we'll hear more about it when Windows 10X launches.

A leak recently confirmed that Windows 10 X will be coming to laptops and other traditional PC form factors in future, but it appears that the operating system is still immature.
According to a new report, Intel may not promote foldable notebooks because of the slow-paced development of the operating system and insufficient flexible panel supply.

[...] the company will delay the unveiling — originally scheduled for CES 2020 — due to issues with “immature OS support”.
The report cites ‘upstream supply chain’ as the source of the rumour and it also adds that Intel won’t promote foldable notebooks until mid-2020.

And then, it’s the so-called “immature operating system support,” which Intel sees as a critical thing for its foldable device strategy moving forward.

Microsoft hasn’t publicly provided an ETA for Windows 10X, but the operating system should be finalized sometime next year, most likely just before the first wave of foldable devices hits the market.

However, app support will definitely be critical, and this is something that Microsoft has long struggled to resolved, not only with Windows 10X, but also with other operating systems, such as Windows Phone. Unless developers start investing in Windows 10X, dual-screen devices running this platform could seriously lack in terms of apps, which in the long term, could lead to the operating system itself biting the dust.

When Microsoft took the wraps off Windows 10 X, there was no mention of the OS coming to the traditional laptops, notebooks or desktops other than the dual-screen devices like Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, Surface Neo or Dell’s Concept Duet.

At CES 2020, Lenovo showed off its ThinkPad X1 Fold and prototype running a vanilla version of Windows 10X was also presented at the event. The 10X actually looks pretty cool, but it’s still not done and you shouldn’t judge it based on these pictures.
Gestures
Like Windows 8 or 8.1, gestures are a big part of Windows 10 X. For example, you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen to launch the Start menu or swipe from the right side to open the quick actions menu.
Notification center
In Windows 10 X, Microsoft is replacing Action Center with a new notification center and it focuses on the quick actions (options). The new notification center comes with toggles to turn on or off features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Airplane mode.
Modern File Explorer
File Explorer is also getting a modern appearance in Windows 10 X. However, the current version of the 10X features Windows 10 Mobile’s File Explorer with minor tweaks.

The software giant has re-engineered this special variant of Windows 10 to install and update the operating system a lot faster. That’s a big difference from what we’re used to with Windows 10 day, which involves the OS downloading an update and then applying it and rebooting. As rumored for months, containers are a key to the 10X platform.
Microsoft is planning to require every Windows 10X app -- Win32, Universal Windows Platform (UWP) and Web apps -- to run in containers as a way to better secure and improve the performance of devices running Windows 10X. The 10X container (codenamed "Vail") is similar to -- though not the same as -- the lightweight VMs/container model used by Microsoft's Windows Subsystem for Linux.

Update: Thanks to a presentation discovered by The Walking Cat, here's some more 10X container info. There are three types of containers in Windows 10X: Win32, MSIX and Native (UWP). MSIX and native containers already exist. Win32 containers are meant to provide the highest compatibility levels for existing apps, including Win32, WinForms, WPF and Electron apps. It provides an environment similar to a desktop OS. A single Win32 container will run all Win32 apps on 10X.

Microsoft has said both the Surface Duo and the Neo will be available for purchase in time for holiday 2020 and seems to be sticking with that commitment.

Supposed to power Microsoft’s push for dual-screen and foldable devices, Windows 10X is still based on the core Windows 10 experience, so it really shouldn’t take too long until you figure out how to use it.

The experience overall is very straightforward and all things are exactly where you’d expect them to be. Of course, Windows 10X still needs further refinements here and there, but otherwise Microsoft’s new approach seems to be the right one this time.
There are Windows 10 features that make a lot more sense now on Windows 10X. And modern apps are among them.
Windows 10X will come with Microsoft Edge pre-installed, so browsing the web will also be a native Windows experience. However, sites need to be optimized for the new form factors powered by Windows 10 X [...]

Microsoft has been working on a modern version of File Explorer for quite some time now, and Windows 10X is apparently the one that will introduce it.

The new File Explorer version currently comes with a beta tag in Windows 10X and is still in its early days, so it often feels slow when working with cloud files. And I’m saying cloud files because it lacks support for local files, but this is presumably one of the features that Microsoft is already working on.
So right now, the new file manager is more or less a OneDrive client, as it can only display files stored in the cloud after you log in with your Microsoft account.

According to ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft Chief Product Officer Panos Panay told some of his team members that the tech giant won’t be delivering the new platform and the dual-screen devices it’s meant for before the year ends.

Microsoft introduced Windows 10X in 2019, presenting it as a variant of the OS designed for machines with two displays. It was planning to ship the Surface Neo, its first 10X flagship device, in time for the 2020 holiday season, but that might no longer happen.

Windows 10X is the more exciting version of Windows 10 that Microsoft has so far touted as made for Dual-screen devices only. Though leak of official documents earlier had mention of its availability for traditional laptops, Microsoft never confirmed that officially.
Now, well-known enthusiast, Gustave has found support for single-screen devices in the Windows 10X emulator.

That may hint at Microsoft planning to use Windows 10X on a variety of devices may including the next Surface Hub. But it is still too early to say what Microsoft is planning to with Windows 10X as it is currently focused on the modular Windows Core OS that will be the base for all upcoming Windows 10 versions in future.

With Windows 10X, Microsoft introduced a new version of its flagship operating system last October that was specifically designed for dual-screen devices. The original plan was to launch the first set of Windows 10X dual-screen devices before the 2020 holidays and in February of this year, it announced a slew of tools to help developers get ready for this new form factor.

Today, it announced that it is pivoting Windows 10X away from dual-screen devices for the time being. And that means we likely won’t see any dual-screen Windows devices anytime soon.
In a blog post today, Microsoft’s Windows and devices chief Panos Panay said that the company has made this decision because at this time, it wants to focus on what it’s customers need right now and to “focus on meeting customers where they are now.”

“These single-screen devices will be the first expression of Windows 10X that we deliver to our customers, and we will continue to look for the right moment, in conjunction with our OEM partners, to bring dual-screen devices to market.”

It’s read-only, allows trusted-signed apps
You can edit, access and delete some system files on Windows 10 and customize the operating system with Windows Registry or change the look of the taskbar with third-party apps.
You can run apps downloaded from a random website, USB driver or another location, but the app should be trusted, signed and maintain a good reputation.
Registry cleaners
Windows 10X does not allow users to ‘optimize’ Windows Registry or run registry cleaners.
No anti-malware software
Windows 10X is read-only and it can only run the signed and trusted applications. This would remove the need for anti-malware, antivirus applications such as Windows Defender.
It’s not yet known whether Microsoft plans to remove Windows Defender or reduce its capabilities in Windows 10X.

Limitations: No File Explorer, Win32 tweakers
The system tray applets won’t be allowed. Also, you cannot use third-party Win32 applications to customize File Explorer with add-in or extensions.
Apps that sit in the system tray are no longer supported. Such apps must be updated and moved elsewhere within Windows.

When you update the modern apps on Windows 10X, the operating system will compare the hashes of each of the components against the update.

Microsoft has remained tight-lipped regarding its plans for Windows 10X. After announcing a pivot from dual-screen to single-screen PCs, the company hasn't yet detailed what to expect from Windows 10X when it launches next year, including how Microsoft plans to position Windows 10X alongside its bigger brother Windows 10, now that they both run on the same form factors.

VAIL, the technology Microsoft uses to virtualize legacy Win32 programs on Windows 10X via containers, has been removed from the latest internal builds of the OS.
I'm told that this is a deliberate change as the company moves to reposition Windows 10X as a platform designed to compete at the low-end, head-to-head with Chromebooks with web apps front and center.

The pivot to single-screen PCs is what drives this change. Originally planned as an OS for flagship premium PCs in the foldable space, Windows 10X will now be launching at the very other end of the spectrum, on low-cost tablets and laptops designed for the education and enterprise markets.

My sources say that Microsoft still wants to launch dual-screen PCs eventually.

The modular and most adaptive version of Windows 10 is currently called ‘Windows 10X’ and it’ll be arriving on traditional single-screen laptops in the first half of 2021.

Windows 10’s modular version was first announced in October 2019 and Microsoft originally said that the Surface Neo would be the first device to run the new OS.
However, everything has changed after Microsoft started preparing Windows 10X for single-screen devices in an effort to meet the current needs of the customers. Microsoft has also removed the Surface Neo listing to clarify it’s not coming this holiday season.

Announced in the fall of 2019, Windows 10X was also the platform that was originally planned to power the Surface Neo, Microsoft’s very own dual-screen device that was scheduled to launch in the holiday season of this year.

A lot has changed since Microsoft first shared these plans, and not only that the debut of Windows 10X was pushed back, but the Surface Neo itself also got delayed with no new ETA actually shared.

Microsoft itself confirmed earlier this year that Windows 10X will focus on the single-screen market at first.

Windows 10X appears to be changing multiple features and apps for the better, making several UI components modern to differentiate itself from the current Windows 10.

For example, Windows 10X removes Cortana during the first-run experience, which means you’ll get a faster and straightforward experience or animations when you configure the device for the first time.
Windows 10X could be finalized in December and it will be deemed ready for manufacturers later this year or early next year, but the modular operating system won’t arrive in the market before the spring of 2021.

Since Cortana isn’t an important app within Windows 10X, Microsoft will be using the built-in “Learning Hub” (currently known as Tips app) to highlight concise explanations of how to perform tasks in the new operating system.

Other pre-instaled apps include Weather, Voice Recorder, People, Spotify, Netflix, Snip & Sketch, and up to 4 OEM apps. For example, if you buy a Windows 10X device from HP, you can expect it to come pre-installed with HP support tool.
UWP, PWA, and Microsoft Store
Windows 10X will be limited to the apps available via the Microsoft Store, such as UWP and PWAs. The operating system is supposed to be lightweight with a strong focus on web apps, so can you expect it to come pre-installed with Office PWAs.

We might see affordable devices with Windows 10X in the Spring of 2021 (Q2/Q3) that can compete closely with Chromebooks.
