The current Windows Subsystem for Linux uses a Microsoft-authored kernel component that provided the same kernel API as the Linux kernel but written from scratch by Microsoft. Essentially, it translated from Linux APIs to Windows NT kernel APIs. That worked pretty well [...]

All is changing with Windows Subsystem for Linux 2. Instead of emulating the Linux kernel APIs on the NT kernel, WSL 2 is going to run a full Linux kernel in a lightweight virtual machine.
This kernel will be trimmed down and tailored to this particular use case, with stripped-down hardware support (since it will defer to the host Windows OS for that) and faster booting.

By using the Linux kernel itself, Microsoft gets all of Linux's features for free. [...]
This also provides a big bump to performance. File system-heavy operations such as extracting a tarball can be up to 20 times faster; other activities (such as cloning source code repositories in Git) will be perhaps five times faster.

Just as promised, Microsoft has delivered a built of Windows 10 to members of its Insiders beta program that includes Windows Subsystem for Linux 2. It was announced just last month at the Build event, and the tech included in Preview Build 18917 (20H1) should bring much faster I/O performance than the previous emulator showed.

The company's Command Line blog has more details on how to make it all work, but for real-world benchmarks we'll have to wait for testers to update and interface with it using Linux distributions that are either sideloaded or installed from the Windows Store.

Microsoft is expected to begin rolling out Windows 10 2004 (the Windows 10 20H1 feature update) any day now.
One of that release's biggest new features is the second version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux, WSL2. Just before release Microsoft is making a change to WSL2 that's designed to improve its "serviceability," officials said on March 13.

Specifically, Microsoft has decided to remove the Linux kernel from the Windows OS image with WSL2. Instead, the company will deliver it to users' machines using Windows Update. Users will be able to manually check for new kernel updates by clicking the "Check for Updates" button or by waiting for Windows to do this automatically.

"Our end goal is for this change to be seamless, where your Linux kernel is kept up to date without you needing to think about it. By default this will be handled entirely by Windows, just like regular updates on your machine," said Microsoft Program Manager Craig Loewen in a blog post today outlining the coming change.
Loewen noted that initially, Windows 10 2004 users and Insider testers using Slow Ring preview builds will temporarily need to manually install the Linux kernel. They'll receive within "a few months" an update that will add automatic install and servicing capabilities.

In the latest Windows 10 Insider build, Microsoft has started to test the distribution of Windows Subsystem for Linux version 2 kernels via Windows Update.

With the release of Windows 10 version 2004, Microsoft introduced Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2) and made it the default version used for new Linux distributions installed on Windows 10.
With the use of a true Linux kernel, Windows Subsystem for Linux no longer needs to translate Linux system calls into ones that are compatible with the Windows kernel.

Windows Update starts pushing Kernel updates
In the past, if a WSL2 kernel update was required, when you tried to upgrade an installed distribution or launch one, you may have been greeted with a message to download and install the latest kernel from https://aka.ms/wsl2kernel.

With the release of Windows 10 Insider build 19645, Microsoft has removed the WSL2 kernel from the Windows image and will start distributing it through Microsoft Update.
BleepingComputer has not been able to trigger a kernel update via Windows Update, but a user posted to Reddit that they received one, as shown below.
