Got my first BSOD at startup since upgrade to Windows 10 about 3x days ago:(

Error: Driver_corrupted_xpool. Yet when I look in the Device Manager everything seems to be fine. Is there any other
ways to check which driver is corrupted? Or could it be something else?
    Thanks

Well, I finally figured out what I had done to block Windows Update (a GP setting) and now the updates could install. However, the one that didn't was Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3087916). I have a feeling this is because I removed IE11 via the "Turn Windows features on or off" interface. If that's the reason, I hope they can recognize and change this. It shouldn't be downloading that update if you remove IE; I remember how in Win7 I wouldn't get Media Player updates after removing WMP.

Does "turning off" IE11 actually get rid of IE11, in particular all of the Flash files in the Macromed folders in System32 and SysWOW64? I was under the impression it was still present on the PC and could be turned on as easily as it was turned off (I could be wrong). If turning off IE11 doesn't completely uninstall it, that could be the reason the update was installed.

Well, actually the Flash update did just install, apparently, because I checked again and it doesn't have the error now. Yes, IE is still there, but if I recall correctly in Windows 7 I would at least stop getting updates for it if I were to "remove" it that way.

The presence of Flash is a little annoying though for those of us that primarily use Chrome and would rather not deal with Adobe's updater.

Thanks @roger_m. In the mean time I did disable "fast start" and it looks it solved the problem. Probably a conflict with some driver. I will check
    into it later with BlueScreenView.:)

Agreed. I primarily use Firefox but use Chrome whenever I need Flash (which is not all that often). I would "turn off" IE except I can't see the purpose if all of the Flash stuff related to it is going to be left behind in the Macromed folders. Is there a security risk involved if you don't update Flash, regardless of whether or not you use IE?

How are you guys dealing with Cortana? Can't be uninstalled, if you "disable" it, it still runs in taskmanager. I've seen people rename the folder.

This update fiasco is a joke. Not being able to choose what updates I want. There are a few updates for my Dell that I don't want on my laptop and this is forcing them to install.

Yep, that's my biggest turn off about Windows 10.
Yeah, it's not going to get any better. I believe I'll sit back and watch this fiasco using Win 7. It should be interesting in a few months with all the complaints about updates, patches...... :isay:

Actually I just found a program. New for me anyways. Called WHDownloader. v0.0.2.1. It allows you to choose what updates you want to download and install.

Isn't it possible to "update" from a DVD/ISO ? Or can you only do a fresh install that way ?

Aside from setting up Windows to Notify WU and disable automatic drivers update, you can use this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

I am currently in the process of restoring one machine back to factory condition using the Recovery Partition and updating Windows. I was glad to see that the Recovery Partition still works and has reinstalled Windows 7. To be clear though, I would never of upgraded this machine to Win10 if I didn't first create image backups. I also have Recovery disks to reinstall Win7 should I need them. I was also glad that Windows remains Activated.

I found that after upgrading to Win10 start, shut down and restarts took much longer than with Win7 and even when Win10 was up and running it didn't feel as snappy as with Win7.

My other machine on the other hand has a brand new SSD with a fresh install of Win10 and is running quite quick so is likely to remain Win10.

I found the same thing after upgrading my 7 to 10, it was quite sluggish and slow, nothing near as nice as 7. However, I then did a clean install of 10, and it was like night and day, clean install is quite fast and normal again, much like 7. I'll admit there does seem to be quite a lot of disk usage with 10, but then again, there was quite a bit with 7 at times also. Just seems a bit more with 10.

Anyway, if you're up for it, you might try a clean install from ISO. You can do that after an upgrade, and skip the key/serial entry twice, it activates from the info saved on their servers after your upgrade. Clean install is highly recommended IMO....

Yes, I may consider that at some point down the track. I may even buy a new SSD for that machine also, but for the time being I will leave it at Win7.

    Thanks.

My experience differs. I upgraded an almost 3 years old Win8.1 to Win10. I'm multi-booting so I clean installed a Win10 ISO to another partition on the SSD. The ISO install has the network card disabled so there are no Windows Updates and no third party drivers have been installed. The ISO install does load to the desktop a few seconds faster than the upgrade but otherwise I'm pushed to see any speed differences.

Win8.1 was snappy and the Win10 upgrade is just as snappy.

I did similar installs on my test computer. Same results as above. I'm happy with upgrades and that's what I'll continue to use.

Could it be that Win10 is optimised for SSD's?

I had the same slow down on this system after upgrading on my HDD but the fresh install on the SSD breathed new life into this old machine.

Aren't SSDs great? An image restore of the basic clean ISO Win10 UEFI system takes 25 seconds on both computers. All 4 partitions restored. (24 seconds on the test computer as it has a slightly smaller image)

Fresh installs always fly compared to old and heavily populated installs, that's probably the reason people really like their new OS in the first couple of weeks, but soon come to discover it doesn't fly that well.

I found Win 7 to be and stay good for several years... It was great. But eventually, the bloat takes over in almost every Win OS and slows things down. I love clean fresh installs though... can't beat 'em.. :)
