Yes ! you can, you must have Windows firewall active with free version.

Firefox, IExplore, etc ... outgoing only
    Steam, Skype, etc... enable all.
    Unknown disable all.

    Hi,

I just want to clarify - I am using the free version of Windows10FirewallControl and have not got Windows Firewall enabled. I am hassled by Windows to turn it on every boot (annoying and i cant see to disable this prompt). Yet ths application works without flaw, and can even be a little too efficient during installs of some programs that access the internet and then fail if blocked - before I can tell it OK.

I'm not sure if this is something changed in a later version? Either way, you do not need Windows Firewall enabled to use the free version.

/me reportet for topic title change

well i cannot speak for the free version, at least it makes not really sense to use it. even the basic is not worth for a notice - too much limitations where needed.
    http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/order.html

at least some always need to learn about product to understand its functionality. here the zones are elementary for full power usage. the only small and for me acceptable solution beside w10fc ist wfc4 from binisoft, and it is much cheaper and integrates fully into windows. other smal solutions are not save enough or usage is pretty poor.

since windows 10 it is really recommended to have the windows firewall turned on - ok, since windows 8 with apps apps cant be used wit a turned off winwall or uac. on win10 with deactivated winwall you cant use or install other fonts than system offers. i have both active and did not experience any trouble, same for win8.

for purpose a view for the pre files and changelog is fine, idd w10fc is slowing down in some cases (latest entry in changelog)

Well, you can't compare Binisoft with this one, to the simple reason that WFC is just an GUI for the internal firewall. Of course it did his job more or less well, but for people which don't trust/want the internal firewall this is an good alternative. Because all other firewalls are outdated/huge (in file size e.g. Comodo, due hips and other stuff) and to the reason what Brummelchen already said (the old gulli guy). He he.

About the FONT's, that's true, but the workaround is to simple enable/disable it, but I admit it's annyoing but I think it's possible for MS to 'fix' this. But imho that's the only problem I found so far.

For me Sphinx is a lot of better compared to WFC because you have more ability's, especially on logging (yes and even with the free one). But I don't want to start an VS. discussion now, everyone have his needs and opinions. I'm fine with it (well I have the pro) but why not give it a try, imho it's much underrated and I don't know why this is not as popular as WFC on this forum here.

i didnt compared, i'd said "acceptable" ;) at least i am not able to compare - my first and only tryout ended in disaster and i never tried again. and now i am happy with w10fc - but that does not mean i wont change at sometime ;)

/ot i think gully is close as dead - after changing times i left, also in mind. i left some other "famous" boards - to let you know. legends never die ^^ ofc that means U 2 :p (ok U2 IS legendary, but thats another story) you're welcome!

Just an information to compare W10FC, WFC and Tiny.

    Memory ...

    W10FC control exe > 15000 ko, real > 3400 ko.

    W10FC service.exe > 8000 ko, real 3500 ko.

    And no visible bugs.

  10. At first glance at the comparatives table, I did not understand where you were hinting at, then clicking on some question marks I found this. Guess this is why you find the free version near to useless?

With free version, you must use Windows firewall.

    http://vistafirewallcontrol.freefor...control-vs-windows-built-in-firewall-t16.html

    " VFC Plus protection:
    any app incoming - OK
    any app outgoing - OK

    VFC free protection
    non system app incoming -OK
    non system app outgoing -OK
system app incoming - not supported(*)
system app outgoing - not supported(**) "

    System traffic :

    2015:11:12|06:51:05|Blocked|4|IPv4 UDP 255.255.255.255:27015(27005)|System|LocalSystem Outgoing|System

Steam … local network … it is rare, and you are not dead.

Agreed. It's a pretty underrated firewall on Wilders.

Not sure why more people aren't using it. Probably because it doesn't have the best user interface and the website doesn't really do a good job of explaining its features clearly, but it is the most resource-friendly firewall out there.

The one thing that would be great is a button to check for new updates. I didn't know that there were newer versions until I visited this thread!

    Hello,
I installed this (SphinxSoftware) firewall to give it a try. I really liked it and was about to purchase the Plus edition, but something strange happened:

My pc was in idle mode (my router was also disconnected from the internet). I wasn't doing anything as the register prompt popped out. I clicked the "close" button but a small amount of transfered data (from NetSpeedMonitor) catched my eye. I got suspicious, went to my router and saw, that something established a connection to the internet.

I tried to reproduce it, but after activating the register prompt manually nothing happened. I assume it happens only, when this window is showing by itself.

So, what is a "firewall" good for, when it establishes a connection to the internet without my knowledge? What data has been sent? Will this happen again? Can I trust Windows 10 Firewall Control?

    Salut,

You must remove Net speed monitor ...

Then, in the paid version, authorize the outbound connections log, and observe the traffic.

Sometimes, port 137 outbound traffic may seem curious ( reverse DNS reply ).

It was the Plus edition after a few days of use. It happened the second I clicked on the "Close" button (after the prompt showed). Since nothing else on my pc establishes a connection to the internet, I'm pretty sure it was this FW. As I stated above, I could not reproduce this behavior after opening the prompt manually. I assume the FW does it only when the prompt shows automatically (maybe even every X time...).
I uninstalled it already, because I don't want something like this happen again, but I would like to know why this was "necessary" . Maybe someone else noticed it too?

the most common used zone here is "web+ftp" and "webbrowser", ofc lanonly for programs with a loop back. you should watch out for peer2peer, that equal to enableall. best way is to have a look into all zones and settings to understand how that can be combined. and if you need only NTP (port 123) then create a zone with only that rule (or dns only with port 53).
and sure, "system" is creating traffic, but that is mandatory for a proper working system (zone = Localsystem).
gamble around after creating a backup. i set my most used zones on the 4 buttons.

    W10FC register.

This firewall add on has no leaks, it's a german and european product, not NSA compatible.

    says
Windows 10 Firewall Control is based on Windows Filtering Platform (WFP), the security core of Windows10/8/7/Vista/2008/2012, completely and does not install any third party kernel drivers. The Built-in Firewall is based on the same WFP as well. The both products work independently entirely. You can switch the Built-in Firewall ON or OFF at your option due to complete product independence.

I think what they mean is that both are interfaces to configure WFP, so if you disable an interface doesn't mean that you have disable all the rules or the firewall.
