I will never use another Windows OS unless I can obtain it anonymously, either free (genuine, not cracked) or bought with Bitcoins.

The big change is the unified model. That's a big deal for Microsoft, and in the long run for the user base as well if MS can achieve a familiar and functional UI across many types of devices. I agree that there's no big "wow" in the 10 Tech Preview if you're just looking for new features, but what do you expect? At this point what does an OS, any OS, need to do that can't already be done? The main purpose of an OS is to support applications and stay out of the way.

I couldn't resist downloading the new evaluating Tech preview of Windows 10, which I installed on my 7 years old Asus notebook normally running Vista Ultimate (Intel Core 2 CPU, T7400 @ 2.16 GHz 2.16 GHz , 2GB RAM, 32 bit). It is very familiar from the outset as my main fast Samsung notebook was bought with Win 8 which I like a lot metro and all.

My impressions are based in reference to Vista and Win 8. It is definitely faster than Vista but the gloss (aero) disappeared, and the overall feeling is somewhat like when I was trying some linux distros some years ago (maybe the display drivers of the Asus are not up to the current standards). I personally don't like the re-introduction of the start menu, and I quickly repopulated the tiles with the most used applications. Vista is more beautiful, majestic, but slower.

Compared to Windows 8... I really can't see any difference except the introduction of the start menu... Honestly I have no new sensations at my finger tips, it feels as if my Asus had started responding like my Samsung. I'm sure things will probably change by the time the final release is ready. The new OS also seems to weigh less in terms of resources than Vista, but this was easy to anticipate.

Beyond what people might like/dislike about Win 10, it seems to me that MS marketing strategy is to release a new OS every 2 years regardless whether there are real innovations; it's a bit similar to the automobile industry business model. I can imagine people who were expecting some changes more in the direction of Windows 7, this might be disapponting, although I must say how can one possibly revert back to an old idea? Vista and Win 7 are one generation, Win 7 being obviously a better Vista, Win 8, 8.1 and 10 is another generation with Win 10 probably ending up being the best of them... There is no doubt that MS makes more money by delivering "new OSs" than service packs...

I think it is going to be a numerical ten like this: '10'.

They should use Roman numerals, and call it Windows X.

    Kerodo,

I've found 3 options. Start Menu plus Metro, Metro Only, Start Menu only.

So far there are only a few changes from Win8 but I expect lots of changes over the next 9 months. The boot time is fast. Half my Win8 time.

I like the multiple desktops. I think I'll have use for them.

Wait, so I can fire up my Windows Server 2012 R2 machine and upgrade to Windows Server Tech Preview via Windows Update?

Hmmm! Windows X. A bit too close to Windows XP.

Nope, seems I have to download an ISO. I'll just wait until DreamSpark updates it.

Besides, it can be mostly disabled, just like in 8, by deleting Windows tasks from Task Scheduler. It breaks OS in ways you can not imagine. :D

    Windows 10 review - A good Start

Here's the most important article of the year. It's a long, thorough review of Windows 10 Preview, covering expectations, installation in a dual-boot configuration with Windows 7 on a laptop with Intel graphics, Wireless and SSD, new desktop, Start menu functionality, Store, apps, search, multimedia playback - MP3, HD video, Flash, task manager, system updates, performance, stability, battery life, network configuration, feedback, message to Microsoft, future business prospects, and more. Will thsi thing redeem Microsoft? Only one way to find out. Read this prophecy, I mean review. Now.

A typical storm in a teacup! Win 8 was a catastrophe for not having a start menu, and Win 10 is MS’s redemption for reinstating the start menu...And you predicted it...I’m certainly impressed...

On a more serious note I think Win 10 as it is at the moment, is an exact clone of Win 8 + the start menu... What a let down indeed, one would have hoped to see some real changes particularly considering they skipped version 9 altogether... Time will tell, and MS promised some real changes by 2015. I for one, got used to metro so much that I had to populate the tiles with all the applications I normally use, in order to feel comfortable and familiar again... That’s life, I know most people don’t share my taste, but it’s nice to read an article of yours without the usual vitriol...

So far on Win 10 tech preview I've managed to install CCleaner, Shadow Defender, WPS Office, Chrome, without any problem. Unfortunately Sandboxie refused to install notifying me that it cannot recognize the OS.

Okami not only disable those tasks, but disable the services that dial home, and all of the customer experience hooks in a system. It's possible, and not overly difficult to do this without impacting the system in a negative way. I make it SOP on my home machines - all of them tweaked in this way.

This may be the best thing you've ever written. Not because it's the first thing I agree with, rather it's the first thing where you appear entirely objective, and balanced. This one is worthy of a pin in my browser for sure.

I think this is wrong. As long as its genuine and points back to you, then some agency could link YOUR ID with that so-called anonymous BitCoin reserve.

If YOU were going to check out folks, wouldn't one of the most important groups you'd check be "those who attempt anonymity" and then at least link Real-User identifications (a "genuine Windows") and whatever cloaking system they tried to use?

I think "fake Win and cloaked Bitcoin" would be more safe, but arduous, then I'd consider the Zebra Mentality - "safety in numbers", hide in plain sight, etc. And switch IDs, just like has been done for generations, hundreds, thousands of years. Move. Don't stay in one spot. Pretending there is safety is why so many spy-novels and caper-books end with the bad guys getting caught!

But - back to the subject!

All the 8.1 drivers that failed on 8.1 are now providing days of solid function on Win10.

I hope all the testers will remember to open up their systems for complete disclosure - this is a Helping Test, not a hiding one.

How much mandatory cloud integration does W10 have? And is a Microsoft account required?

I'm not too crazy about the idea that Microsoft will be able to identify every customer by their name. Especially in this post-Snowden world.

Oh come on... Are you serious? Realize that already everyone that wants to know anything about you, already knows.

I advise Fortune 500 CEOs, and some movie stars on privacy, and you know what we've determined? Focus on privacy of what should be private, and don't ruin your life worrying about privacy/anonymity for what doesn't necessarily need to be private/anonymous. Encrypt your passwords, personal documents, and compromising photos. But try not to become obsessed with being anonymous with everything or you effectively close yourself off from a lot of beneficial things. For example a family reunion on Facebook - does it matter? Public Domain Intel is everywhere on you already anyway, just compartmentalize the crucial things, the things where it's necessary.

Buying your copy of windows online, from Walmart, or from Bitcoin dealer has no relevance at all with anything.

Thank you, actually, I'm always objective. It just appears to be subjective :)
