As far as I can trace, there wasn't a driver update. I tend to think that MS collected my HW specs and at the time there wasn't finished their in-house evaluation of my AMD graphics. Hence the incompatibility warning. However once they finished the evaluation and it turned out to be compatible, the status changed. Just my guess though.

You are correct, Victek. Microsoft will be storing the activation in the cloud once the initial upgrade has been performed and the activation information stored in the cloud will be related to a hardware hash of the system and potentially other factors that haven't been mentioned yet. There is also some worry that a Microsoft Account may be part of this, but no confirmation on that at the moment.

Thanks for checking. Good a guess as any at this point. Could be they're changing each individual's status as drivers, etc, become available. It's something to keep an eye on until a definitive answer is found.

Are there any final ISOs available yet?

A slow ring ISO for build 10130 should be released either this week or next. If you mean are there any RTM ISO's available the answer is no.

I found the issue of why i did not get windows 10 reserve icon. It was voodoo shield that was blocking and once I uninstalled it and click on GWX.exe and ran it, I got the windows 10 reserve icon and reserved mine.

Just to add and maybe also support my guess ... I have noticed a sentence "Last processed on 4.6.2015 at 5:36" in the status window. It means that Microsoft regularly checks the status of your machine as regards the compatibility with Win 10. However a frequency of the check is unknown to me.

I still haven't found a definitive answer regarding automatic 'prep' updates but I'm leaning towards them being presented as optional.

Your notion of MS evaluating then updating your status is confirmed here : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/...ocid=win10_auxapp_ReportCovers_ compatibility

Also, at that same link, there's info regarding language packs.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. I ran the previously posted batch file on a Windows 7 computer yesterday and it didn't work - it ran just once, not in a loop and finished without any errors, but did not enable the upgrade icon, so perhaps this one will work

I did the same here also on Win 7, tried the other batch file and it didn't work. I spent close to 4 hours last night trying to get it working, then this morning tried the above link from MrBrian, and now all is well, reserved 10 today and got my confirmation in email. I tried option #1.

It would probably be a better option to start from a fresh Windows 8.1 installation and then upgrade to 10 right?

    You and me both.

So far I haven't done anything GWX except for disabling the five tasks in gwx and GWXTriggers in Task Scheduler.

This is the best tho convoluted info I could find to date; it seems there will be RTM ISOs available at some point.

When I built this third gen i7 box three years ago, SSDs were still out of my budget and IMHO not yet mature enough.

I would want to pull the 1TB SATA drive and jump on the free W10 program and install it on a nice new SSD.

    So how would that work?

Toss in the Win10 DVD and at some point it'll ask for my Win7 SP1 OEM DVD Product Key?

Or, like in the Old Days, stop and prompt to insert my Win7 OEM DVD to verify the ownership of previous version media?

Can one even use an RTM ISO to do the free update if one doesn't register in the GWX process?

    A start-from-scratch Win10 free install to a new SSD - I wonder...

That is one option, although upgrades are not always pleasant. Even of you go the upgrade route, you can choose the Reset This PC option within 10 which will make it essentially just like a clean install.

    Earth .... occasionally
.... my edit and my bold above ..

Thanks for that post haakon .
I , for one have some of those same questions bouncing around in my head .

A full iso download that will work with a W7 Product Key would be my first choice also .

I have no personal interest in W10 for myself , but I'd like to have an iso that I can play about with in a VM
.... I'm going to come across W10 in my work at some point anyway .... same as I have with W8.

I'd be mighty grateful if you could post some details on what I've bolded above , and I reckon that others would also appreciate it.

    Thanks

PS - Maybe " GWX Strategies" would be a worthwhile topic for a new thread ?.
I know that other threads touch on it , eg Bork Tuesday , but this must surely be a very relevant topic in the coming months .... or not ?

    Some info states W7 / W8. While other info states W7 SP1 / W8.1
    Is W10 free upgrade for W7 (sans SP1) / W8 (not 8.1)

My understanding is Windows 10 will not be offered via Windows Update unless SP1 is installed in Windows 7 or Windows 8 is not upgraded to 8.1; the updates/upgrades are prerequisites. Why not update 7/8 to the latest versions?

Hopefully, Windows 10 final release ISOs will be available by then, otherwise without having any Windows 10 installation media on CDs or USB drives I would think this be difficult, especially for the average user.

Thanks ~ I have no objections to SP1 or 8.1
Just wanted opinion as to whether my understanding free W10 upgrade requires SP1 / 8.1 is accurate. Just a pet peeve when authors miss stating SP1 or the fact that 8 is not 8.1
Well, when we're all running W10. No worries...:isay:
