There's something seriously wrong, if it is taking two weeks. My experience with upgrading many PCs is, that if the previous build was working fine, after upgrading to a new build it should be working fine right away, or very soon afterwards.

If there are some issues that are resolved after two weeks, that's certainly better than them not being resolved. But it is not normal behaviour.

    Hi Bo, @bo elam

I have always preferred to delay getting the latest version Build, and because I run Windows 10 Pro, I have taken advantage of the settings in Windows Updates which permitted that option.

However, I can always try a recovery to an earlier build as indicated by this link.

Not exactly, my situation but should be applicable in my circumstance. I believe that I have 10 days or so, for this option, after which it may be too late to go back to the 1803 build.

I still have the Windows.old folder, so a recovery should be possible as per here

    Windows Update_2 feature updates simultaneously_07.JPG

P.S. N.B., that the dates of those folder/files post date the install date, which was yesterday evening my time. I find that odd to say the least.

Tarnak, give your systems a few days to settle down. And dont fight it. Thats my advice.

If you dont fight it and dont try to fix whats not broken and dont need fixing, you ll see the high activity that you are seeing now eventually go down.

You went from 1803 to 1909, that's a big jump. You are supposed to be seeing a lot of activity right now. You did the upgrade today, the activity you reported is not unusual..

For me, going from 1903 to 1909 was very smooth, I saw perhaps even less activity after doing this upgrade than in some regular updates. But you going from 1803 to 1909 is not the same as what I did.

I remember when I first got my W10, new computer, the first couple of weeks it drove me crazy. Brand new system, brand new installation. I though like you are thinking now (something is wrong), and the first couple of days I fought with the computer but then I quickly realized that what I was seeing was supposed to be like that. I stopped fighting the activity and ever since I done what I wrote in my previous post which in the end it has helped me to understand the computer behavior better which leads to never experience issues and enjoy using the computer more. So, some updates take longer to settle down. The one you did today, certainly will take a while.

Do extra reboots, and leave the computer for long periods of time idling. It ll help, so dont do nothing like going back or anything like that. IMO, that would be a mistake. You ll have about 10 days to do it. There is no reason for you to do it the day you upgraded (unless there was really something something wrong, not your case).

I didn't choose that, Windows Updates did. ...Something does not seem to gel with what is going on with my system. I'll wait for things to settle, but as a last resort before the 10 days is out, I will try the recovery as I have mentioned, in my earlier posts.

Roger, I am not a computer guy, don't work in computers but I believe you do. If that's the case you ought be aware that with W10, after updates, specially upgrades (like going from 1803 to 1909), the computer goes through a period of high activity by the system, this high activity takes place usually when we are not using the computer, reboot or when using it for something very light.

In a way, I am lucky. I feel lucky because as I started using W10, I quickly realized that it was best not to fight it and also realized that seeing high activity sometimes, specially after rebooting or starting the computer and after updates and upgrades is normal. This high activity by the computer as it settles things down are not signs that there is something wrong. You have to use your instincts or knowledge to know when the high activity is a sign that something is wrong or when is just normal and expected activity.

I did try Windows Updates the day before, but the system was not complying:

It started with offering 1903, but then it ended up with 1909.

    Tarnak,

My updates have been smooth. Nothing like you have described. If it was my computer I'd.....

    Create a backup image.
Download the 1909 ISO using the MCT.
"Update" your 1909 to 1909. No problems doing this.
If it's not fixed then restore your image and maybe revert to 1803 in a weeks time.

    Hi Brian,

I have no luck with a Backup strategy. Even Macrium Reflect which usually runs daily, failed earlier today. BTW, I have been very lucky with Windows Updates until yesterday. So, creating a backup, wouldn't that only incorporate the changes since the last daily incremental?

Tarnak, if you have a backup created since the 1909 update then that will suffice. If not then maybe create a full backup of your 4 important partitions as discussed in the past. Certainly 3 of these partitions will have changed since the 1909 update.

Brian, It is so hard to understand. I certainly don't remember the guidance I received from you 2/3 years ago. I just have to grin and bare it, I think. :(

P.S. I have to go out for awhile, and get away from the computer just to ease up.

There is always activity whenever you reboot or start the computer. My routine in W10: I leave it running for about 12 minutes every time after boot. I don't interfere with the computer, I let it do what it wants to do. I learned doing this is good for the computer and for the user (if you do this, the computer doesn't bother you later on when you are using it). The only thing I do during this time if anything is open Task manager, and see whats running. Thats how I became familiar with the activity, whats running, what to expect and whats normal.

Regarding going from 1803 to 1909, that's a move as huge as installing W10 for the first time. Perhaps a notch or two under but still, is a big move and there's going to be activity for a while. IMO, his system is probably as healthier as it can be and just have to follow the process of letting Windows settle down all things that have to be done and installing. Windows doesn't do them all at once. Perhaps there's a reason why. Can you imagine if it did try to put everything in the right place all at once, the System would appear (more than it does now) that something is wrong.

Bo I have not seen what you described on any of my Win 10 machines, the are usable straight after boot (fast boot always turned off)
Like @roger_m I have installed quite a few upgrades and clean installs and if I saw a situation such as Tarnak is describing I was consider it to be a 'bad' upgrade and either do an upgrade of 1909 to 1909 via an iso built via the Media Creation Tool (as Brian suggested) or copy my files to an external and do a clean install on 1909.

    Bo,

My CPU settles to 1% within 30 seconds after power on. I've seen computers (not mine) that take up to 15 minutes for the CPU to settle but I haven't been able to fix them.

Perhaps it has to do with what type of computer the user has. I dont know, but I seen a lot of other people report seeing high activity for a while. Some call it normal, others mess up the computer trying to fix something thats not wrong, and others go back. Upgrading from 1903 to 1909 I didn't see high activity, it was as quiet as it can be but when I first got the computer, I saw it. When I went from 1803 to 1903, I saw the activity for about 2 weeks and expected it. And there was nothing wrong with my computer at that time and there's nothing wrong today.

During the first few minutes after reboot, I usually see high Disk from Sysmain for about 30 seconds. Thats the process that does high activity every time. But there is a lot of movement in Task manager for a few minutes. Processes come and go. My routine is to let this activiy quiet down before I start using the computer, that takes about 10 minutes. CPU is usually low, except perhaps for a few seconds. There is one process that pushes CPU up to about 30% for about 30 seconds about once a week, its not running right now but is named something like wsapp. Activity usually comes from Disk, not CPU. It is normal, perhaps you guys are not noticing it but I do. In my computer, after reboot, if you click Fn and H, the light in the computer is switched to tell about Disk activity. Thats the way I set it and prefer to have it. High Disk activity is normal after starting the computer, but rare after the computer has been running for about 10 minutes. Brian, this is as close as I can get to describing for you what I experience after reboots. :)

I did a similar upgrade on a Toshiba laptop from 2006 with a slow processor and it was running fine afterwards. So I guess it just depends on the computer.

After 3 days of frustration living with the boot up and instability problems that eventuated going from Build 1803 to Build 1909, I decided to try the "Recovery" option that I mentioned earlier in one of my recent posts in this thread.

I have gone back to build 1803, successfully. Hopefully, when I next do a restart this will continue, and no more instability problems. Every picture tells a story as they say.[IMG][IMG] ;)
