Back when Windows 10 S (now called Windows 10 Pro in S mode, since there's also now a Windows 10 Home flavor) first launched, it was promised that users would be able to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free for a limited time. When Windows 10 S became S mode, it was promised that the upgrade to the corresponding full version of the OS would always be free.

But according to various reports, the switch out of S mode isn't working for some users. Normally, it's as simple as opening the Microsoft Store, searching for the option, and installing it, but apparently the page isn't loading, leaving users in S mode, which only allows for them to install apps from the Store.

It's unclear when this will be fixed. It could be in the next cumulative update, which should be on August 13, or it could be longer, given that this issue might have a relatively low priority.

Windows 10 1903 Blocked for Kerberos Domain Connected Devices

Microsoft has now started blocking customers from installing the Windows 10 May 2019 Update on domain connected devices that use MIT Kerberos realms.
This comes on the heels of a previous announcement issued on July 25 saying that "devices connected to a domain that is configured to use MIT Kerberos realms will not start up or may continue to restart" after installing a recent cumulative update.

Kerberos domain-controlled Windows 10 devices using MIT Kerberos realms affected by this newly acknowledge issue include both domain controllers and domain members as explained by Microsoft.

Microsoft is still currently blocking a number of Windows devices with compatibility issues from receiving the May 2019 Feature Update, in an attempt to prevent users of incompatible computers from experiencing degraded performance after upgrading. In early 2017, we began the process of disabling VBScript in Internet Explorer 11 to give the world the opportunity to prepare for it to be disabled by default.

The change to disable VBScript will take effect in the upcoming cumulative updates for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 on August 13th, 2019. VBScript will be disabled by default for Internet Explorer 11 and WebOCs for Internet and Untrusted zones on all platforms running Internet Explorer 11. This change is effective for Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 as of the July 9th, 2019 cumulative updates.

The settings to enable or disable for VBScript execution in Internet Explorer 11 will remain configurable per site security zone, via Registry, or via Group Policy, should you still need to utilize this legacy scripting language.

Microsoft recently released a new feature for the Windows Subsystem for Linux version 2 (WSL2) that allows you to configure global options that will be used by all WSL2 Linux distributions installed in Windows 10.

Microsoft has put a full stop to the rollout of the Windows 10 May 2019 Update to PCs with Qualcomm Wi-Fi driver. According to Microsoft, older PCs with this outdated Qualcomm Wi-Fi driver are having connectivity issues after installing the update, and hence the decision.

Some older computers may experience loss of Wi-Fi connectivity due to an outdated Qualcomm driver. An updated Wi-Fi driver should be available from your device manufacturer (OEM).
To safeguard your upgrade experience, we have applied a hold on devices with this Qualcomm driver from being offered Windows 10, version 1903, until the updated driver is installed.
Microsoft has suggested users update their Wi-Fi driver to the latest version. The software giant also clarified that no user should proceed with manual download and installation by using tools like Windows Update Assistant without updating the latest version of the Qualcomm Wi-Fi driver.

New Windows 10 Cloud Reset Feature Spotted in Insider Builds

Microsoft is adding a new "Cloud Reset" feature to Windows 10 that will download an OS image stored on Microsoft's servers when performing a reset of the operating system.

In the latest Windows 10 18950 build, Windows sleuth WalkingCat discovered that Microsoft redesigned the "Reset this PC" feature. This new change now includes a "Cloud download" option that downloads Windows from Microsoft's servers and a "Reset locally" option, which reinstalls using the existing Windows operating system.

To Albacore's surprise, the Cloud Reset feature downloaded and installed the older Windows 10 RS1 Build 14393. In a series of Tweets, Albacore explains that this because the feature is three years old, which explains the old build being downloaded.
It is important to note that this feature is in a very early design stage and even Microsoft has stated that even though we may see signs of this feature, it is not ready yet, and will be available in future builds.

This helps us gain better feedback on overall build quality. A subset of Insiders in the Slow ring will have features turned off by default, and another subset will have them turned on by default. I don't like this game of controlling features this way. I have seen a random back and forth on the start menu thing even on the release build. They need to stop playing with the settings.

Windows 10 users won’t see the May 2019 Update if they have Intel RST drivers version between 15.1.0.1002 and 15.5.2.1053. If your device is running a newer version, you should be able to install Windows 10 version 1903.

Microsoft originally stated that the recommended version of Intel RST driver is 15.9.6.1044, but the company is now asking users to install version 15.9.8.1050 instead. On August 10, Microsoft updated the documentation on its website to reflect the new change.
According to Microsoft, users with versions 15.5.2.1054 or later shouldn’t run into issues, though the company still recommends installing 15.9.8.1050.
Microsoft promises fix
Microsoft has also confirmed that a fix will be deployed later this month.
‘We are working on a resolution and estimate a solution will be available in late August,” the document reads.

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 build 18956 to the Fast ring late last week, introducing an Always on Top mode for the Calculator app, among other new updates. That particular feature was not immediately available at the time, but today it appears to have gone live for Windows 10 Insiders.

As detailed by Microsoft when announcing this feature, the new Calculator app mode allows you to set it on top of everything else on your PC display
Once in Always on Top mode, the app remains on display no matter which window you navigate to. It's an ideal capability for when you're doing some calculations for your weekend travel expenses, for example.

I find this to be an inconsistent experience not only on Insider builds but also on the standard release. As a matter of fact, the one PC I have on the slow ring is the only one that doesn't have this enabled. The rest are on regular Windows Updates and it seems to be enabled most of the time. I'm frustrated with never knowing what to expect.

.....the company also announced that starting with this build, good old Notepad will now be split from the OS and will be updated via the Microsoft Store in the form of a Store app.
