I'm really impressed with build 1903. One complaint about Windows 10 I have seen posted about here and have seen myself is that on some older computers, Windows 8.1 runs better. The main issue I have found was that the Start Menu was slow to open. It would take a second or two between pressing the Windows key and the Start Menu opening. This was very frustrating, making Windows 10 ununsable. Last night, I figured out that the cause of this, is the very slow Intel integrated graphics used in low end CPUs. I have a Toshiba laptop released in 2006, which runs Windows 10 very well and I realised that this must be due it having dedicated graphics, as on another laptop on which there is not much difference in CPU performance I had the Start Menu delay. I figured there was a chance, that with the changes to the Start Menu in buld 1903, that the issue would be fixed.

I just installed build 1903 on my Lenovo ThinkPad X61s. After setting the visual settings to "best peformance" and installing driver updates, the Start Menu opens quickly. If it's been more than a few seconds since it was last opened, the Start Menu is completely blank when openend and it takes a moment to display the content. But this isn't a deal breaker in my opinion.

Although many people complain about Microsoft releasing new builds, my experience indicates that new builds can bring noticable improvements. Having said that, I should point out, that after joining the insider program, the upgrade failed twice, for different reasons. Rather then trying to resolve the issue, I tracked down a 1903 ISO and did a clean install, as this is just a test computer that has nothing of importance on it.

Windows 10 updates - One small step for man, one big ...

In updates we trust. Or something. Here's a long, thorough article discussing the upcoming changes in the Windows 10 update functionality, including overview of the current state and associated problems, the need for reliability, the hassle of managing Windows Update services on Windows Home and the question of user trust, the paradox of system tweaking, strategic importance of the changes, other observations, and more. Enjoy.
