Windows 10 users may soon uninstall more native apps

Microsoft plans to unlock uninstall options for more native applications that the company's Windows 10 operating system comes with by default. Native applications provide users of the operating system with all kinds of functionality: from viewing photos and editing images to jotting down notes or capturing screenshots.

While some of these applications are popular and useful to the bulk of users, some users prefer to use third-party programs or apps which they install manually on their Windows 10 devices.

All these applications will get an uninstall option in Windows 10 version 1903 in the Settings application and even directly from the Start Menu by right-clicking on them and selecting the uninstall option of the context menu.

Windows 10 users who run Windows 10 version 1809 can remove some apps already from the Start Menu.

I read about HP and Dell users that were getting blue screens and on certain systems with Realtek and Intel sound-cards, speakers stopped working. It's truly a mess, do you really think people want to deal with all of this?

Microsoft’s problem isn’t how often it updates Windows—it’s how it develops it

It's fair to say that the Windows 10 October 2018 Update has not been Microsoft's most successful update. Reports of data loss quickly emerged, forcing Microsoft to suspend distribution of the update. It has since been fixed and is currently undergoing renewed testing pending a re-release.
This isn't the first Windows feature update that's had problems—we've seen things like significant hardware incompatibilities in previous updates—but it's certainly the worst. While most of us know the theory of having backups, the reality is that lots of data, especially on home PCs, has no real backup, and deleting that data is thus disastrous.

The issue with zip file extraction first appeared in a Reddit thread, as users queried some odd behaviour when files were being copied out of an archive. Previous versions of Windows would show a warning if those files already existed in the destination. In Windows 10 1809? Nothing.

Font substitution left on the bench
Less severe, but highly annoying for affected users, is a problem where some Unicode characters are failing to show up correctly.

Dimmer and Shine
Just because you have gone all in on Microsoft, and picked up one of the company's fondleslabs, does not mean you are immune to the curse of 1809. Users of Surface Go devices are reporting problems with the brightness control on the troubled OS.

Microsoft has confirmed that, yes, that whole zip-file thing is indeed a bug and, er, no. It won’t be fixing it until November

A post by Microsoft on the software giant’s answers forum detailed the issue, which sees the OS silently skip files already in the destinationwhile extracting from a zip archive. The problem only affects extraction using Windows’ own File Explorer.

Slightly more worryingly, Microsoft also warns that users should “not attempt to Cut and Paste items from a compressed (.zip) folder” because “this may result in unintentionally deleting items that may not be recoverable.”

We fixed the issue where dragging (extracting) files from a .zip file in File Explorer to a write-protected location you don’t get a “Do you want to replace these files” prompt and the copy action fails silently.

We fixed an issue causing roaming profiles to not work correctly.

In the October 2018 figures from Netmarketshare, desktop users of Windows 7 totalled 39.35 percent (-1.53) but nipping at its heels, finally. is Windows 10 at 38.28 (+0.84). That puts the Windows-as-a-Service offering from Microsoft just 1.07 per cent away from becoming the most used operating system in the world.

The news will come as a huge relief for the company which has taken much longer than expected to reach the milestone.

File associations no longer work properly on Windows 10 after a buggy update. Windows won’t let you select certain applications as your defaults. We tested multiple PCs running the stable version of Windows 10, and they all had this problem.

This is a strange bug. It affects some applications, but not others. For example, Windows 10 won’t let you make Adobe Photoshop or Notepad++ a default application for images or text files. But you can make other applications, like IrfanView, VLC, or Google Chrome, your defaults.

The same problem occurs when we try choosing a new file association by right-clicking a file and using the “Open With” context menu. After picking Notepad++ and selecting “Always Use This App,” the file opens correctly in the application we chose.

However, the next time we open that file, it opens in Notepad rather than Notepad++. Windows just forgets our chosen file association.

While Hoffman has stated that this bug appears to have been resolved in build 1809 (Windows 10 October 2018 Update), users are clearly still having issues in that build as well.

A growing number of users are reporting an error on reddit, explaining that all of a sudden, their Windows 10 installation is no longer activated. Reactivation doesn’t seem to work, they add, and in some cases, it looks like Windows 10 Pro has been downgraded to Home.
All Windows 10 versions impacted
At this point, the glitch seems to affect Windows 10 version 1809 and version 1803, and most users say they upgraded from Windows 7 or 8.1 during the free upgrade campaign in 2015.

Nothing works for the moment to re-activate Windows 10, and running the built-in troubleshooter doesn’t make any difference. Microsoft hasn’t provided a statement to explain what’s happening on the affected systems, and we’ve reached out to the company for more information and will update the article when an answer is offered.
