Windows 10 Redstone 4 to Finally Allow Multiple Instances of UWP Apps

“Prior to Windows 10, version 1803, only one instance of a UWP app could be running at a time. Now, a UWP app can opt-in to support multiple instances. If an instance of an multi-instance UWP app is running, and a subsequent activation request comes through, the platform will not activate the existing instance. Instead, it will create a new instance, running in a separate process,” Microsoft explains.

The software giant hasn’t released any such previews for Windows 10 apps as part of the Insider program, and it’ll be interesting to see if it wants third-party devs to be the first rolling out such features.

Microsoft is yet to announce the official name of the Redstone 4 release, but it’s believed it could be called Windows 10 Spring Creators Update.

I just applied KB4090007 to one of my systems with a 6th Gen I5 processor in it. I can now report that this system is STILL RUNNING and the microcode level now shows C2.

Microsoft plans to release the next feature update for the Windows 10 operating system in March/April of 2018. The company switched to a "two feature updates per year" release schedule which means that it will release a feature update in the Fall as well.

The new version lacks major features. There is Windows Timeline, an update to Task View, but that is about it. Microsoft Edge and other areas did receive lots of improvements but none that I'd call major.

There is plenty to discover, however, despite the lack of major new features.

The company is delivering a new privacy settings layout in the set up experience that enables users to make informed choices right when setting Windows 10 up. The company said that new privacy settings layout will present different settings with the “recommended Microsoft selection for the best Windows 10 experience distinguished by a dotted line.”

Unlike the usual setup process where the best selection considered by a company is already selected and we just keep clicking on “accept,” this new layout only distinguishes Microsoft-recommended settings with a dotted line and doesn’t actually let the user click on accept until they make a choice.

With Windows 10 S becoming S Mode in 2019, Microsoft is aiming to give educators more control over their systems. Windows 10 S is currently advertised as the most secure version of Windows 10, as Win32 software, which is often used for distributing malware and compromising Windows hosts, is blocked.

Microsoft is yet to officially announce the name of the Redstone 4 update, but as it turns out, the company has already decided how it’s going to call it.

Twitter user @h0x0d has discovered new evidence that Windows 10 version 1803 will launch as Spring Creators Update, a name that Microsoft itself teased a few weeks ago as part quests included in the Bug Bash for Windows insiders.

The Spring Creators Update is included by the software giant in the output of PowerShell command Get-VMHostSupportedVersion on Windows 10 Redstone 5 build 17618.

Windows 10 build 17115 comes with no known issues, and if insiders found any, there’s a chance it’s nothing big, so with such flawless performance, it makes sense for Microsoft to ship it to the Slow ring as well.

New ISOs on their way
The next step for this particular build to become RTM is to be promoted to the Release Preview ring as well, the very last one before production devices. If this happens, build 17115 is very likely to be RTM.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update’s end of support takes place according to Microsoft’s 18 months of support policy, though it’s worth mentioning that security updates will continue to be released for computers enrolled in the LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) available for enterprises.

Windows as a Service
Discontinuing older Windows 10 versions after 18 months is part of Microsoft’s Windows as a Service push which relies on a semi-annual channel with twice-per-year feature update releases.

This means that running the most recent Windows 10 version guarantees receiving continued support, though for enterprises, migrating to the latest release isn’t always an easy thing to do. With the Anniversary Update set to reach end of support, however, there’s only one option available: upgrade to a newer version or no longer get updates.

Running more tasks before the reboot, however, doesn’t cause any impact on system performance or battery life, as the process runs with low priority, Microsoft guarantees.

63% time reduction for Redstone 4
Reducing the offline time is a project that Microsoft started working on before the rollout of the Fall Creators Update, [...] the reboot dropped to 38% to 51 minutes.
