Is the only way now to set a default app to a desktop program (e.g. a portable app), entering Run > control /name Microsoft.DefaultPrograms /page pageFileAssoc ?

MS seem to be making this more difficult, the CP option defaults to Settings and seems they only want one to use Store apps.

I don't know about portable apps, but I have Windows Live Mail as my default email program. Start > Settings > Apps > Default Apps.

Libre portable and Foxit PDF reader portable are my default programs. As well as regular KMPlayer., 7Zip. I didnt have to do anything special or go through hoops to set them up as default programs.

Also Libre and PDF-XChange Editor, as well as MusicBee and FastStone Image capture, all set up some time ago ... but I was wanting to change the latter to IrfanView and didn't see a way to do that in 1709.

It seems to only offer Store app alternatives now - no 'other apps' selectable, and always switches to the Settings interface, even when going in through CP (unless I do the Run > control /name Microsoft.DefaultPrograms /page pageFileAssoc trick).

    I must be missing something.

You should be able to, right click a file/picture, click open with, click choose another application, navigate to application (Irfanview), select it..
