Window Session Overload

  1. Recently I installed Spybot and Emerald PopStop and today Spyware Blaster.

I was sitting at the computer this morning and suddenly, in less than 30 seconds, my screen was innundated with Windows Explorer Sessions. I was logged onto my bank's secure connection and had just ended my session. I disconnected from the internet but the windows kept popping up. I assume that they must be from some program in my computer and not from any site I was on at the time. Everytime I deleted one, another two or three would pop up. I could not run Task Manager or exit from my ID using the start button as the system was all tied up trying to load these windows sessions. You know how when there are so many they get put in a group? Well I could see the "group" total was over 80 but when I tried to right click and delete the group, that option would not come up. I had to just turn the computer off as the system was hung.

Have you ever heard of this happening? I'm not even sure what questions to ask!

    Karen

    Hi Karen,

Please go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/, and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log as a .txt file, and copy and paste its contents into your next post.

Most of what it lists will be harmless, so do not fix anything yet.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hi Karen,

First off, you have a BHO I have never seen before, leave it for the time being and mail
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bho1.dll
to me by clicking this link.
I'll have it analyzed and will let you know what to do with it asap.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stcloader] C:\WINDOWS\System32\stcloader.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Terminate Popup] C:\Program Files\Free-Popup-Killer\fpuk.exe
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    You can add:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1
to that list if you didn't install that yourself.

Reboot after doing so, preferably into safe mode
    and delete:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\stcloader.exe
    C:\Program Files\Free-Popup-Killer <= entire folder

    Regards,

    Pieter

I am now a registered user, Painter.

I did everything you said except delete the free-pop up folder. I could not find it.

    Hi Painter,

Nice to see you registered. :)

As an addition to the reply I mailed you. The folder could very well be missing since fpuk.exe is nowhere to be seen in your running processes.
So the startup entry was probably orphaned.

    Regards,

    Pieter
