Users across Europe and parts of the Middle East experienced outages shortly before 7pm, BST, according to downdetector.com.

Wikimedia’s German Twitter account posted: “The Wikimedia server…is currently being paralysed by a massive and very broad DDOS [distributed denial of service] attack.”

Yes, I did read about it at TV-teletext at German broadcaster ZDF.
I just tried the German Wikipedia; I could reach it.

Following a "major DDoS attack" on Wikipedia causing the site to go down globally on Saturday, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has issued guidance to businesses, large and small, on how to prepare for and mitigate denial of service (DoS) attacks.

"It is not possible to fully mitigate the risk of a denial of service attack affecting your service, but there are some practical steps that will help you be prepared to respond," said the NCSC.

To be fully prepared for a DoS-related outage, businesses should ensure their operations are scalable so in the event that a massive spike in traffic does hit the site, the infrastructure can automatically account for it and assign greater resources to accommodate it, according to the NCSC.
Regular testing of the network's defences and monitoring should be carried out in addition to having a solid response plan in place.

The Wikimedia Foundation taps $2.5M from Craig Newmark to beef up its security

Last week, users around the world found Wikipedia down after the online, crowdsourced encyclopedia became the target of a massive, sustained DDoS attack — one that it is still actively fighting several days later (even though the site is now back up).

Now, in a coincidental twist of timing, Wikipedia’s parent, the Wikimedia Foundation, is announcing a donation aimed at helping the group better cope with situations just like this: Craig Newmark Philanthropies, a charity funded by the Craigslist founder, is giving $2.5 million to Wikimedia to help it improve its security.

“We weren’t a sitting duck before the breach last week, with a lot of security capabilities built up. But this gift will help improve our posture and build upon on what we started and have been building these last two years.”
