Why aren't you using Comodo?

Hey there, I have been into windows security and malware for a very long time and for a few years I used Norton, then Kaspersky Internet Security and for the last few years Comodo Internet Security.

I am wondering why so many people prefer products other than CIS when it is free and from what I experienced very protective?

Sure it has bugs but so has Kaspersky (a few years ago it was practically un-usable with SSD's, that's why I tried out CIS and sticked with CIS) and probably every other security product out there.

Are other products more lightweight? I didn't see any difference between CIS or KIS for example.

Auto-sandbox and firewall are the most important features in my opinion (automatically restrict the app if dangerous and tell me when something is "calling home"). And I think those are key-features in CIS while KIS strikes better with it's AV. But aren't we in a generation where "AVs" are done?

For the last few days I am thinking about switching from CIS to KIS or ESET but the more I read the more I believe CIS is the better product. Still tere are so many "haters" and so many people who prefer some other product. Why? What is your opinion about Comodo, or better what is your opinion about CIS?

    Regards

I use Comodo FW 5.10 on my XP boot and my W7 Laptop. Still a very good product, that happens to be free.

Because I never will. I can't forgive them for what they did to BOClean and to Kevin & Nancy McAleavey.

Comodo is only a firewall, not even good one, it hides behind HIPS and its AV is comparable to Windows defender. And since it is HIPS based, it is a nuisance.
It is for a very limited audience, not for common users, only for people, who like to tweak firewall rules to insanity, I know, I have been there, it is pointless.
Well, HIPS can block suspicious files, but only AV will tell you, if it is really a malware. AV just works, it is install and forget.

To sum it up, if I would hated someone, I would install CIS to his computer saying how good it is and proving it by linking to fake Matousec's tests. :argh:

I hope you're joking. Comodo FW is a very good firewall. I've been trying to infect my VM, but can't...

That is your opinion, mine is opposite, I believe, that is what zakazak expected to hear, since he is interested in negative reviews.
Besides, I despise Comodo company just like Malwarebytes, there are some hidden shady things, that can not be explained.

Well if you do searches here on Wilders or Google you will know most of us older members remember the promises that Comodo Broke to it's customers when they acquired BOClean from Kevin & Nancy and then what they did to Kevin after the fact. That's all I can say as I don't want to go Off Topic to much but it's my reason I will not touch or recommend Comodo.

@zakazak There is alot of history between many Wilders members and Melih (Comodo Owner). Im sure from a quick Google or Wilders forum search you will find much of the answers as to why its not commonly used or recommended product. I leave it for you to decide whether its a dislike of the product itself or the way Melih has orchestrated his company.

I was not around for the BOClean saga of 2007, hence only provide a perspective on products not its CEO, I have used their products before, Version 5.10 Firewall and HIPS being my favorite. For some reason version 6 nothing special, (new features that never worked for me properly). Version 7 was good and used it for a while but many users experienced broken features, and i have not tried version 8.

Personally it depends on how you would like to use their product, from a HIPS, Sandbox perspective or and AV Behavior blocker perspective and the security level you want to achieve. ie Proactive or internet security or the other one i cant remember.

HIPS with SANDBOX- No antivirus, hips very strong and form the foundation of their product. They would be nowhere if they did not have such a good HIPS.The hips can be adjusted to the level of sensitivity, but requires user knowledge when the hips pops a question. The ability for the sandbox to kick in was an essential feature for less savvy user as it allowed the user to allow things to run in a protected environment.

AV with BB. Their AV is hopeless and but as of version 7 it was improved to a reasonable level, and in my experience the HIPS caught things sooner than Behavior blocker and was deemed an unnecessary feature by many while using it with hips. But good when the user only ran AV and BB without HIPS.

Comodo from version 6 onward, seem to add more features rather than fixing the existing ones. In some cases features were only fixed until the new version was released. ie from 6 to say 7. The features that are being implemented are in my opinion unnecessary when they should really be concentrating on expanding on their strong points of their product, instead of washing it down to mediocre one size fits all more features the better.

At the end of the day, if you depend on HIPS and Sandbox, you are very protected. If you use AV and BB then you might as well go for something like Kaspersky/Eset etc. They will provide stronger protection for less maintenance.

    regards.
