On Wednesday, the case "Oberdorf v. Amazon" will undergo a rare hearing in Philadelphia by all the federal judges on the US Third Circuit Court of Appeals. The closely-watched case hinges on the question of whether Amazon can be held liable for damages caused by goods sold in its third-party marketplace, where outside sellers sell their products alongside Amazon's own offerings.

GOP Sen. Hawley asks DOJ to open a criminal investigation into Amazon

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., is asking the Department of Justice to open a criminal investigation into Amazon in a letter sent Tuesday.
The request follows a report finding Amazon employees had used data from third-party sellers to rival them with Amazon’s own private-label products.
Two lawmakers in the House of Representatives called out Amazon for potentially misleading Congress about its use of seller data following the Journal’s report on Friday.

Amazon on Friday offered to send one of its executives to speak before a congressional antitrust committee, but it didn't say whether CEO and founder Jeff Bezos would show.

The company was responding to US House members, who on May 1 called on Bezos to testify before them. Their request was prompted by a Wall Street Journal article that said Amazon workers had repeatedly accessed the sales data of individual sellers on the e-commerce giant's site when deciding what Amazon-branded products should be launched.

"We remain prepared to make the appropriate Amazon executive available to the Committee to address these important issues," Brian Huseman, Amazon's public policy vice president, wrote in a three-page letter sent Friday.

A Friday letter from Amazon to members of Congress looking into the company’s third-party seller practices was “unacceptable,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) tweeted Saturday.

Members from both parties have serious questions about Amazon’s business practices and its honesty with the Committee,” Nadler tweeted. “We will not permit stonewalling of our investigation, by Jeff Bezos or anyone.”
“No one is above the law, no matter how rich or powerful,” Cicilline tweeted. “We have asked Mr. Bezos to testify before the US Congress about Amazon’s troubling business practices and false statements, and we expect him to do so. Whether he does so voluntarily or by subpoena is his choice.”
