If you play games a lot, go for XP. If not, not much difference between W2K and XP.
At least SP2 closes some security holes in IE (and some other obscure leaks as well). If you run W2K and use another brower and mailclient not much between the two.

Don't forget to create a second, regular user account. Don't use Administrator account for your day to day business. I hardly ever need Admin. Yesterday was the first time in a half year I had to run a (registry optimization) tool as admin.

And by now linux can really be a candidate to replace your windows OS. The only thing I'm missing is my VB (I don't play games), but Gambas might be a decent replacement development tool.

Very true André, if Linux did have the ability of playing at least 2 games I like (like hl2 or painkiller) I would use that...

now I think of it...naaahhh I would miss all my security programs too much lol :D

I tried a live cd some time ago, but it didn't work...go figure :)

I read some things regarding the famous iptables...seems like a decent firewall to me...I like webbased configs (like tiny) but like I said the live cd didn't work :D , But something tells me it has nothing to do with my cdrom :lol

What also encourages people to download crap is also up to the mind of the user. When it comes to most 13-15 yr olds, they have no idea bout virii or active x or worms or what browser does what. Now let's look at the case of a porn surfer. They don't care, as long as they get their pr0n on thier pc, they are content.

I will withdraw from posting in this thread as this is not a debate forum, and obviously what I am saying is wrong.

The best, most secure version of Windows for the non gamer is RHL 9 Fedora. AMAZING. Just go to your neighbourhood geek and just check it out. Even its font rendering is sooooo *droooooling* good! Or try Mac OS X on a Mac machine. You'll be converted pretty soon.
If you DO play games... may God have mercy on you... Win XP SP1a is the logical choice. Sp2 has been seen to have multiple disorders with drivers and programs alike.

I think SP2 is a must have for WinXP users... Since there are not updates for SP1 anymore :(

I dont know; I guess she was just...y'know, like, she didnt want to convert this into a flame thread. She meant well though, I'm sure.

And no, I dont think the post was wrong or inaccurate in any way, it was a good post, really.

And I didnt mean to say anything bad either, TrBot.

    Regards,
    Firecat

Actually, I think I offended TrBot. I can come off a little high-handed and argumentative. :(

In my defense, though, it really sort of bothers me when people imply, without any elaboration or factual commentary, that a change of software is the answer to all problems. This type of commentary occurs all over the Internet, and it gets really tiresome. Even when the poster is largely correct and implies that one OS is better than another, or one browser is better than another, or one spreadsheet is better than another, or one AV is better than another... I still think one should always explain one's reasoning in more detail than simple innuendo. Well, I guess that this isn't turning into much of an apology so let me end it right here by saying:

My apologies if I offended you TrBot. Feel free to post what you want. ;)

No prbs Alec, cause we all do sometimes...

now is a moment I miss those old karma cookies :)

Cause I can understand the things you are saying here...luckily we are all different to eachother cause this is what is just happening...

different thoughts, likes and dislikes and that is all :) ...that is why I always try to stay out of those kind of discussions anyway ... it has to be watched out for real carefuly cause it can end up bad... :ninja:

Just 'coz I've faced a similar situation before... dropping out of threads would kill a surely good opinion and leaves a bitter taste in the mouth for all concerned.
