I use "Diskless Angel". It can take the OS to run in Ram as virtual image. Once infection of virus occurs, just reboot the computer and all viruses will be destroyed because it is only a virtual image.

Since you are using a laptop I assume battery life may be important to you as it is for me.

On my Vista laptop I also use AVG8 free, command line install, no linkscanner or toolbar. I use it primarily for scanning pop3 email, downloads, etc., and rely on Sandboxie for protection.

Sandboxie can be turned off when not surfing thereby saving battery life. I also use the Vista firewall, “it’s already there”, and low resource consumption.

    Other low resource antivirus considerations:
    Avast, standard shield only install.
Bitdefender Antivirus 2009 has laptop mode for improved battery life.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Richard! I'm also a newbie, actually this is my first post. :D
I bought my laptop 2 years ago and did mega research re: desktops, laptops, printers, and software prior to purchasing all. At that time, ZoneAlarm was highly recommended so that's what I bought - Zone Alarm Security Suite. I've been happy enough with it to continue. Matter of fact, I just renewed with them this month. I admit I considered switch to Kapersky but when it came down to it, I didn't change. My reasons: ZA has worked for me for 2 years and I have 2 years invested in 'training.' I didn't want to start that process all over again. http://www.zonealarm.com
ZA Security Suite includes AV, anti-spyware, firewall, ID theft protection and is compatible with Vista and XP. Current pricing is $50 (same for 1 or 3 PC's), auto updates. I opted for CD (another $10).
I think there's another firewall on my system - due to wireless connection but I don't know what it is.
Toshiba Satellite A105 laptop; Intel core duo T2400; 120 GB SATA HD 5400; XP Pro SP2; HP 2840 All in One (color laser); wireless (Motorola 3347); Qwest DSL (just changed to Qwest; email: q.com and gmail (Outlook 2003).
CheckPoint has a new program: ZA Force Field. I'd be interested in user comments as I'm considering purchase. It's touted as 'a protective layer around your browser.'
Hope this helps. And, I'm glad I found this site!

I'm back to AntiVir Security Suite (with WebGuard and firewall turned off), and Comodo firewall with D+.

When Zemana AntiLogger gets a full HIPS and firewall, I will try that with AntiVir. I still don't like Comodo's connection with the Ask Toolbar, and a couple hacking reports at the Comodo forum made me wonder. But I think Comodo's ok for now.

After a lot of reading and this topic I decided to start with this security setup:

    Avast Home
    Comodo Firewall
    MBAM
    SAS
    Dr.Web Cure It

All for free to see if this works.
Till now i am quite happy with this setup.

I use Ubuntu Linux for all web browsing and netbanking etc. So I don't need to worry about AV. And the Linux kernel has iptables built into the kernel, so I don't need to worry about FW either. Gives perfect secure stealth reports.:thumb:

And I only use Windows for online gaming and general stuff.

I use either ESS or just the ESET av & look n stop both with SAS which IMHO is the best addon to an av firewall combo
