Newegg currently has 310 external drive cases.

I twould seem that best would be aluminum with a fan.

What about using 3.50 inch or 5.25 inch case?
I am ASSuME-ing that the spec refers to the capability of holding a particular size drive, not the size of the case. If so, then I guess the 3.50 inch case is of interest for hard drives. Did I ASSuME correctly?

Then, I see that some cases offer a SATA to USB interface.
In some cases, no pun intended, the SATA is native SATA, in others, there's a SATA to IDE bridge in the case.

For new computers, would not it be better to get a SATA case?

Hmmm, with an older computer (no SATA), might not a SATA case work with a SATA drive?

If so, I could build the drive and case on an old system and move it to a newer system as needed?

I currently have a 2 yr old Seagate 120gb IDE hard drive which was previously in the computer for extra storage. I now have a 250gb hard drive in replacement, but the main HD is also a Seagate 120gb. (which is what I will be backing up). So IDE is my only option.

Look up the enclosure on Newegg.com and read the buyers reviews of this enclosure.

The reviews are really great for almost every product they sell. They tell the good and the bad because they are buyers, not employees.
