My older computer, 1999 vintage, originally indicated that the hard drive had a capacity of 12.1 gigs. I never used as much as 10, so space was not an issue.

I am giving it to a friend and decided to remove a lot of programs that he would not use.
When I checked the hard drive it indicated that it had the capacity of slightly over 9 gigs.
What happened to the other 3??

    Thanks,
    Jerry

But the problem is that the properties of C drive originally did show the total size of the hard drive which was 12.1 gigs that were available after all the OS and stuff were on the drive. I always had the difference in that and what I had installed. In time I only had about 6 gigs left, but that was plenty.

But now it shows 10.3 with 9.6 GB usable, and 5.5 empty space.

It is not especially important, but a puzzle as to why the difference between 12.1 and now 10.3.

I don't think any worms got in and ate them. :D
