If I run MBAM with real-time protection, could I disable that module?

well might be a silly question but nonetheless a valid avast! subscription for 4.8 pro would entitle an upgrade to v5 pro right? the internet suite would have to bought separately...

Yes. But the upgrade price (Pro->Suite) will probably just be a difference between the prices of the two products (I suppose 10 bucks or so...).

    Hi Vlk :)

I just noticed the AniSpam & Blockers tab in the pictures on page 1 of this thread.

And It Made Me Think Of Something! :doubt:

Does Avast 5 - Suit, Pro, Free .. Have an Adblocker ?

Symantec made one BIG Mistake when they got rid of their - Pop Up Blocker & Adblocker

    Yeah! .. Sure!
Firefox users are OK with - NoScript & Adblock Plus

    But IE8 Users :(
    As an example...
    This Website Here : http://forums.computeractive.co.uk/index.php
Firefox + NoScript + Adblock Plus = No Adverts!
    But the same website...
    Internet Explorer = :argh:

I think an Adblocker in Avast 5 would be a real winner ;)

I agree on that one. It's a complete failure if that is removed :D

I notice the main page GUI shows the Firewall. Will the Free Home version GUI be minus the firewall listing, or will the firewall listing be greyed out?

I think the firewall would have to be a paid feature. Or at least the 'sandbox' component should be.

I know AVs are costing a decent amount of cash these days, but considering most people are selecting the 'free version', and are used to a free version, if avast was priced competitively for the user seeking that step-up in protection from the free version, say $29.95 for the pro/suite version with the firewall (for one user - and say $69.95 for three users), there'd surely be a massive amount of users upgrading to pro.

The full suite with the firewall and sandbox feature could cost say $39.95 (for one user - and say $79.95 for three users).

Or maybe I'm dreaming. Just look at prevx's pricing, very competitive. :)

    My bet would be

$49.99 for the AV for up to 3 users

$59.99 for the suite for up to 3 users

Even better. But you'd need that low price to attract the free-loaders, including myself.

I've bought plenty of software, but when it's around the $29.95 mark, too good to resist.

Combining yours and mine (and changing to .95 cents just for the sake of it):

    AV (with extra features)
$29.95 for the AV for 1 user
$49.95 for the AV for up to 3 users

    Suite
$39.95 for the suite for 1 user
$59.95 for the suite for up to 3 users

    Couple of more questions:

    1. The current version ( v4.8 ) features a screensaver - will v5 feature something beyond that in terms of idle-detection? The reason I'm asking this is since there's more software using the "screensaver-method" - JKDefrag/MyDefrag (which it's now) for example.

    2. Will PUPs be detected by default? I would rather it not. I recall that kind of detection has caused me lots of trouble or extra steps, and therefore always disable that kind of detection, alternatively not enable it. Most importantly I'm asking this question since the operation is planned to be silent/automatic out-of-box.

Yes, the screensaver method will be present of version 5.

The PUP will be an opt-in, I mean, not-checked by default, as far I know.

Yes, but does it feature something beyond that, in terms of detecting idle-activity? Please read my previous post again. Otherwise it'll for example bounce into my current setup already (e.g. MyDefrag). I'm thinking about things like Symantec's Norton looks at; full-screen detection, mouse and keyboard activity, the screensaver being on (a great measure, but very different from having an obligatory screensaver of their own; they detect if the screensaver is on, and does its work while it's, simply because then it knows the user is not doing anything - smart!).

See what I mean? :) Thx for the answers! ;)

    Hi :)

Oh! - God! - No!
I hope it doesn't work like Norton's Idle Time thing ... :ouch: ... Hated It!
    In Fact!
Norton's Idle Time ... This .. & .. That .. & .. The Other ... Was what made me get rid of flamin Norton :thumbd:

    Sorry Raven
But I'm hoping that Avast 5 sticks with it's screensaver.
Where we can use it if we wish to .. But not if we don't!

You haven't posted why yet. I see it as the ideal since it'll only work when you're not doing something.

    Hi :)

Because NIS 09 always seemed to have a big long list of stuff ... Waiting to run when my laptop was idle.

I just turn my laptop - ON ... Use It! ... Turn my laptop - OFF

I Know It Sounds Daft!
    But..
Norton made me feel like I should go away and leave it to do its jobs all the time.
    Plus!
My laptop performed terrible with Norton installed.

    Anyway!
This thread is about.. Avast .. Not! .. Norton

    Norton Is Gone!
And me and my laptop are very happy now - With... Avast

Okay, I just wanted to get things clear - get things clear because you countered something that I suggested for improvement of Avast!. No offence intended.

That you don't leave your system to go idle ofc doesn't mean you're unprotected - it'll only do additional tasks like on-demand scans for example, which, if we take that example, is in order able to remove what's already on the system. You'll still get updates and protection against what's running now - which is what's really important.

That it doesn't suit your system is a completely different thing - how software performs on a particular system is completely individual. ;) I see people running into problems with software that I've used that I could never imagine - software which I personally had no problems whatsoever with.

The screenshots look like an improvement. Very nice!
Version 5 sounds very interesting. I'm willing to beta test it also.
