Hope the installer for this version 5 will still allow some components not to be installed.

@Trjam - I take it that it's a well known fact that you do indeed seem to change/advocate a different product each week! Even I have noticed it! :D

    Well it is Monday.

I have always liked Avast, as most here do. My issues have always been with 3 computers to protect, the Pro version wasnt viable. Now with what Vlk has stated, that should change with version 5. Alwil has done their work. We all thought a AV update was coming but they have created a suite to throw into the arena. This should really make it interesting.

They have hired on some new folks, Vince Steckler is the new CEO from Symantec. I think they have decided to step out of the middle of the pack and show what they can do.

    (1) Hi, Vlk! Is this what's mentioned just a tiny bit on new things in the post about the soon coming v5 - and will it be exclusive to the Pro version only? It was also mentioned that both the free and pro versions should deliver the same core-protection. If this proactive module is indeed pro-exclusive, wouldn't that change that fact possibly a lot? Just to mention, I may have gotten this slightly wrong (being for pro only). :)

    (2) Looking at the screenie of a detection-popup, it indeed seems to be featuring automatic operation/silent-mode. Is this something that's default, so that the software is truly a set-and-forget application?

    (3) How have you set the out-of-box settings? Are there any features that aren't enabled by default which would lower the protection or so delivered from the software, or would you say that what's been set are the optimal settings so that we have that already from start?

No, the Behavior Shield will be present in both free and paid versions (and the suite). The blog article was talking about something little bit different - a virtualization layer (a Sandboxie-like thingie)...

Yes, this is the default. No questions / no nagging by default. We figured that most users are not competent to answer the alert dialogs anyway, so it just makes sense to have the program preset so that it's friendly even to the novice users (which, as we all know, are in fact the majority of the population).

The firewall (in the suite) uses the same approach, no nagging by default.

We're trying to balance between user-friendliness and security, so there'll always be drawbacks and that's why the settings are customizable. But we believe that the our-box-box settings are very meaningful for the vast majority of our user base.

    Thanks
    Vlk

is this virtualization like a software virtualizer like sandboxie does or is it like a system virtualization or is it something completely different?

Technically, it is comparable to Sandboxie, yes.

hmm well this sounds very interesting then :) sorry if this was said in the blog but is this exclusive to the suite or will the pro version have it as well? meaning the only extras the suite wuld have over pro is the spam and firewall right?

    Hi Vlk,

New Avast looks great! So refreshing and symantecly yellowish. :D

I noticed that there are a lot of settings options and no "Default" settings button. Maybe it is no bad idea to put it somewhere in the gui? Of course, do not ask this for myself but for the benefits of novice users. :argh:

Also, can you explain more about the firewall part? Specific features?

Hehe... suddenly I just got so eager. :D I'm having the thoughts of running Avast! 5 Home together with Prevx (v4.0) once it's available for testing. That's, my AM-front.

Vlk, please send me a PM or similar once you begin testing. You can count me in. :D
