Cellebrite Says It Can Unlock Any iPhone for Cops

On Friday afternoon, the Israeli forensics firm and law enforcement contractor Cellebrite publicly announced a new version of its product known as a Universal Forensic Extraction Device or UFED, one that it's calling UFED Premium. In marketing that update, it says that the tool can now unlock any iOS device cops can lay their hands on, including those running iOS 12.3, released just a month ago.

ICE Buys Smartphone Hacking Tech From Cellebrite

In June, ICE awarded a contract worth up to $35 million to Cellebrite, according to a federal filing, which was noticed by a researcher at Bellingcat, an investigative news outlet.

According to the federal filing, ICE awarded Cellebrite the contract because it was the "only one responsible source" able to satisfy the agency's requirements. In return, the agency is acquiring "universal forensic extraction devices" from Cellebrite, in addition to training and support services for at least one year, with the option to extend the contract for another four years.

The contract comes as law enforcement agencies across the US have been buying up smartphone hacking tech to help them investigate criminal suspects and the devices they own.

In June 2019, the secretive Israeli digital forensics firm Cellebrite, which works with law enforcement to unlock cell phones, announced a significant product development: For the first time, government agencies would be able to break into phones in-house using licensed Cellebrite software.

Previously, if law enforcement wanted to get into newer devices, they had to send the phones to one of Cellebrite’s digital forensics labs, located in New Jersey and Virginia. But Cellebrite’s new UFED Premium program gave law enforcement the ability to “unlock and extract data from all iOS and high-end Android devices” on their own, using software installed on computers in their offices.

In May 2016, a student enrolled in a high-school in Shelbyville, Texas, consented to having his phone searched by one of the district’s school resource officers. Looking for evidence of a romantic relationship between the student and a teacher, the officer plugged the phone into a Cellebrite UFED to recover deleted messages from the phone.

The Cellebrite used to gather evidence in that case was owned and operated by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. But these invasive phone-cracking tools are not only being purchased by police departments.
Public documents reviewed by Gizmodo indicate that school districts have been quietly purchasing these surveillance tools of their own for years.

Much of this is because folks don't ROOT their devices. That means that they simply delete stuff and not WIPE it when removed. Difference is day and night!
