My main purpose is/was ... the driver for my scanner isn't compatible with Win7 64bit ... so having a copy of XP OS that I can quickly boot up to get past this hassle is why I originally started to use virtual machines. I've tried the freebie virtual machines and they're all pretty easy to setup and much speedier than having a multi boot scenario - because a couple of clicks and you're in business.

But I've stumbled upon another good thing for me ... it's been pretty cool trying out lots of software, especially Linux OS' that I'm discovering for the first time. I've found using virtual machines to be a good way of getting into Linux. And finding something that's to my liking.

    ----------------------

I'm currently using VMware player. I've just recently switched to it from VirtualBox and happily I've found VMware Player works much better with my setup. I found Virtualbox was pretty laggy - no matter how I messed with the resource settings it just wasn't very responsive.

In comparison, I'm finding the default settings of VMware Player work really well. The virtual OS' run smoothy and is responsive. Using the virtual OS for a length of time is now more enjoyable.

    64bit Win7 & VMware Player

    Virtuals added so far ... Win7 32bit ... Ubuntu ... Puppy Linux

I might get the Win 95 CD cranked up for some nostalgia.

The thing that bugs me is that this product is on my setup and I don't know how the h**l it got there!

But now that you say business I did have MS Office 10 Professional Plus for a while as a beta that is a possible cause.

I agree that I should try a virtual to learn. Just trying to avoid the errors others have made so I can make new errors.

How about firewall/router, backup, utilities and other appliances. Running vms make sense in using less hardware and for centralised management, being able to control everything from one Window.

example, last night I switched over to Astaro firewall appliance made a Windows Home Server back up while zeroing out a drive and doing some work.

Sure, as long as they are standalone operating systems outside of other guests.

Main OS is lucid 64 and will more than likely stay that way until 12.04 (Pinhead Panther?).
    Currently have:
Win XP Pro SP3 (for DVD copy SW)
Maverick x86 (will more than likely remove)
Natty x86 (to try unity 3D)
Open Suse 11.3 x86 (just to say I have it)
Debian 505 x86 (see Open SUSE above)
    edit: added LDR 1.09 linux

Will probably update Open SUSE and Debian shortly, if I get around to it.

edit: forgot to mention, using VB 4.06

I've been using VBoot a lot lately. VBoot lets you boot to OS that are installed on virtual disks (VHD, VMDK or VDI file). I considered my VBoot installations to be virtual machines because they reside on virtual disks, but they don't fit the definition because I don't run them inside other OS.

In terms of VMware and VBox, I've only installed Win XP (32- and 64-bit) and various versions of Windows 7.

VBoot takes control over your own monitor, but system calls are still filtered through the hypervisor. Run in debug mode and see for yourself. OS resides in virtual disk files will see part real part emulated hardware.

Now installed Windows Embedded Standard 7 from DreamSpark. Looks like a small Windows 7 installation to me (only uses 4.71 GB on default install after updates). Minimum RAM is 512 MB, more needed for IE.

Got rid of Solaris 11 Express, because it forces password changes every once in a while and doesn't provide any updates (even after registering).

Instead, I've installed OpenIndiana, which strangely provides the first development version on their main site instead of latest beta. I can see why, as the latest beta failed to install. It was quite slow installing and booting up at first though.

Going to try FreeDOS and hopefully install OpenGEM on it.

FreeDOS was harder to install than expected, having to use FDisk instead of XFDisk, and rebooting twice to format hard drive.

I can't believe that finding a decent guide to installing OpenGEM on it is so hard.

Next is Doscore, if I can even find the download link.

So far, using just Virtual PC. Guest systems include various single and multiboot combinations of Win98, 2000, and XP, plus some live CD and custom boot CD experiments. Host system is 98SE-lite.

Had errors booting into Doscore CD. Therefore, I've given up on DOS, being a mainly GUI user.

Got rid of Windows Embedded Standard 7. Too similar to Windows Starter. Also, I think I've allocated too little disk space for SP1. There were other issues as well (such as no audio driver).

Trying out openSUSE KDE 64-bit with 768 MB RAM. So far, so good.
