Although a few more smartphones debuted at CES 2020 than usual, the real smartphone event of the year is still to come: Mobile World Congress 2020 is happening very soon, and it’s where every company even slightly involved in the mobile industry comes together to show off new devices, hardware, and innovations.

The list of tech firms dropping out of MWC is growing by the day. It started with LG and Ericsson before Nvidia, Sony, Amazon, Intel, Vivo, and many other companies followed suit.

In a statement earlier this week, GSMA assured the 2,800 exhibitors that the show would go ahead as planned, but we’ve since had confirmation that other big names won’t be attending. Facebook, Nokia, Royole, Cisco, McAfee, AT&T, and Sprint won't be participating, and more will doubtlessly drop out before the February 24 start date in Barcelona.
Canceling an appearance is proving costly for smaller firms.

Spanish publication El Pais writes that GSMA will meet this Friday to decide its next steps, which could include suspending the event. It adds that Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom are also considering skipping the show.

In light of the spreading threat of the coronavirus in China, more companies are pulling out of the Mobile World Congress 2020 (MWC 2020) as a precaution. Despite how it may appear, or the news that filtered out yesterday, MWC 2020 isn’t canceled.
As noted in a post by MSPU, more than 20 high-profile companies have already pulled out of the Barcelona-based tech event, including Facebook, Amazon, Sony, LG, HMD Global (Nokia), Nvidia, Intel, and others.

There are no plans to cancel MWC 2020 this year, but with enough big names already pulling out of the event, it might be a wise decision. MWC 2020 is set to take place in Barcelona, Spain on February 24-27, 2020.

Mobile World Congress 2020 is not being cancelled: Update – Yes it is

Update: Bloomberg reports that the GSMA is indeed cancelling Mobile World Congress 2020 due to Coronavirus, saying the outbreak made it “impossible” to hold the event.

Despite numerous high profile withdrawals, it appears Mobile World Congress, the premier smartphone conference of the tech calendar is not itself being cancelled.
The news was announced today by Spanish press after the GSMA held a meeting today to decide the issue.

GSMA Announces Refunds for Canceled MWC Barcelona 2020

Following the cancellation of MWC Barcelona 2020, the organizer of the world’s biggest mobile technology conference will offer refunds or discounts to future gatherings to the attendees and companies that had paid to attend February’s event.

GSMA announced a plan to provide the following goodwill financial package: [...]
Eligibility for a cash component to the financial package is for those exhibitors who did not cancel their attendance at MWC Barcelona 2020.

In addition, GSMA said that the MWC2021 rates will roll-back to those used in 2019.
