Today, we have more video, audio and photos than ever before, but they’re often locked away, trapped behind layers of usernames, passwords and texted security codes.

1. Take inventory of your digital assets
“What do I have?" That’s the most important starting point, says Alison Arden Besunder, a trust-and-estate partner at the New York City law firm Goetz Fitzpatrick LLP.

“Unless you take stock of what you have, you can’t think about what you want to happen to it when you die," she said.
2. Add a digital executor to your will
Once you have that down, you’re ready for the next questions: Who do I want to have this? What do I want to happen to it?

You can also give your digital executor powers to access your online accounts, including social media and email.

3. Add digital heirs to your accounts
What wills don’t contain are lists of all your online accounts and passwords or any special directives you have for those accounts.
Some of the big tech companies provide specific tools.

On Facebook, assign and add a legacy contact.
On Google, assign an Inactive Account Manager, who can similarly download the data, including any pictures you may have on Google Photos.
Unfortunately, other tech giants don’t offer such features.

4. Plan to pass on your passwords
The easiest and safest way to make sure your digital executor can access your accounts is via a password manager. You can set up emergency access and designate an emergency contact in Dashlane and LastPass.

There are some new digital legacy services that are trying to centralize steps like these.
5. Record your stories
All these legalities and tech issues are what I call the “easy" part of digital legacy. What’s harder is finding the best way to capture your life’s stories and memories, and finding out what those who will survive you will want, too—in content and format.

Apple will soon let you pass on your iCloud data when you die
A new program coming to iPhones, iPads and Macs, Digital Legacy allows you to choose five Legacy Contacts who can see your stuff

Until now, when a loved one or family member dies, there was no easy way to access their iCloud account and absolutely no way of unlocking their phone without knowing their passcode. According to the iCloud terms of service, the deceased person’s data goes with them even with a death certificate.

With the new Digital Legacy program, first announced at WWDC earlier this year and arriving in iOS 15.2, you can designate up to five people as Legacy Contacts. These individuals can then access your data and personal information stored in iCloud when you die, such as photos, documents, and even purchases.

To activate Digital Legacy, Apple still requires proof of death and an access key. Still, it’s a much more simplified process than before, which could require a court order confirming a right to inheritance, and even then, there was no guarantee you would get access to the data.

Both Google and Facebook have systems in place for designating account access to other people, and it’s good to see Apple catching up here.

I’m about to introduce a topic that most of us would rather avoid: our digital legacy. In other words, what happens to all our digital stuff after we die? (And if your answer is “That’s not gonna happen,” you haven’t been paying a lot of attention lately, have you?)

If you’re reading this, odds are that you’ve got a lot of digital stuff, both on your own devices and floating around in the cloud: backups, photos, tweets, Facebook messages, texts, you name it. If you’re no longer around to pay attention, these can hang around for a very long time — and some of it may be important to your survivors. (For example, who else has the passwords to your bank accounts and credit cards?)

LOL good one. My health isn't that good anymore so I did decide to print out the most important usernames and passwords for my mother. Of course my personal accounts like Gmail and Instagram will die with me. But she does need access to my online bank and broker account.

There’s no easy way to put it: We’re all going to die. And once dead, why would we care about our social media presence? Sounds like the least important thing to consider at that point. But in fact, it isn’t.

If we don’t plan what to do with our digital footprint, it will be up to our loved ones to go through that painful process. On top of their grief and the usual paperwork, they will have to deal with Facebook, Twitter, Apple, or whatever accounts you owned. Above all, they’ll want to protect your memory – but also possibly avoid notifications about your birthday.

Less than 15 years ago, this was not really an issue. Sure, there were people on MySpace and other localized social networks, but the internet was still young enough and small enough not to care about our legacy (or anything at all, really).

But now, managing the digital legacy of deceased relatives and friends is a growing issue, and in a few decades platforms like Facebook might even have more profiles of dead people than of live ones, mainly as its user base starts to stagnate. And, let’s be clear, we’re getting old, and Gen Z has its own piece of the web.
