    the National Security Agency is america's ultra secret/powerful intelligence agency.

    surprisingly, by law, NSA's intelligence gathering is limited to foreign communications

    you could say they are america's version of MI6

    OK thanks, I suspected that they may be something like that. So what makes them different to the CIA or any of the other alphabet groups?

    They grew out of military intelligence. They recruit and train very smart mathematicians and engineers, and they let them play with very expensive toys. They basically invented computers, methods for signals interception, etc.
