not sure where you got that thing or what you are used to as being fast or slow but there is no way on earth i would say a atom 1.66 running autocad is fast let alone windows 7. as roger said its not like it take a year to open something but it is very slow when compared to my i7 i have in my every day laptop. and i would never even attempt to run something heavy through autocad with a atom lol. more power to ya if it does what you need but far to slow for what i expect now a days.

I prefer 17.3" because I like the screen space for work and for watching movies when not at home, and I also want the power that bigger laptops can offer (e.g. 2 drive bays so you can use one for SSD and one large one large HDD for data, lots of memory, etc.). i don't mind lugging it around between home, office, vacation, ...

fwiw, I also have a Samsung Galaxy Tablet 10.1, which is what I carry on airplanes or when I want to travel light, or for example, at the gym to record workouts (on a spreadsheet) or to watch videos during cardio.

Are still glad you got that instead of an Apple?

I was using my XP based ASUS netbook the other day, and the speed was fine, it definately runs faster then my MSI netbook which has a slightly higher spec and Windows 7. Maybe it is an issue with XP vs Windows 7. But ASUS (Eee PC 1000HG) is quite usable, whereas the MSI (Wind U100 Plus) is annoyingly sluggish.

It was a gift, but yes, I prefer Android to iOS; much more flexible, more freedom with apps.

  6. I'm using a 16.4" (16:9), anything smaller I find the keyboard uncomfortable to use. Again, not a good idea for university/travelling. Trips back and forth, got tiring. :)

It comes down to personal preference (and amount you have to spend).

Here is what I have now.2 gateway netbooks 10.1 - 1 late 2009 macbook 13.3 -1 Asus laptop 14.1 and 1 HP laptop 15.6. The 13.3 and 14.1 is still my pick for all around perfect size.Big enough to see and small enough for portability.

You made a classic error with your question. You failed to state the intended purpose of this system.

Only you can decide what is better for you. All I can say is folks who travel a lot or who lug their systems around every day typically (but not always) want something that is light and easier to carry. Folks who are looking more to replace their desktops don't care as much about lugging around big, heavy notebooks, power supplies, external drives, etc.

I will say watching a HD movie or playing a game on a larger screen is more satisfiying. Also in some cases the smaller laptops can be more expensive then the larger.

Well, if you are looking for a desktop replacement, I recommend getting a desktop PC! This is because in spite of the fluff and propaganda the notebook marketing weenies would like us to believe, notebooks are NOT good desktop replacements (or good gaming machines). They can pack the horsepower in there, but not the necessary cooling. If a PC case is challenged to keep the innards cool when pushed (and they are) there's no way a notebook case can.

If you absolutely must have a portable computer, then I recommend getting one with a large monitor - since traveling convenience does not seem to be a priority. And note a larger monitor comes with a slightly larger case - which might allow for better cooling. However, even large screen notebooks are thin - and that's really where the cooling limitations affect system cooling.

Alternatively, you can get small screen notebook when at home, connect it to full screen desk monitor (and keyboard and mouse).

15" or below I think is best suited for travel.

17" or above I think is best suited for around the house.

I usually take my 15" MacBook Pro out and about, but tend to use my 17" while relaxing around the house

Unfortunately, my small netbook hasn't got much use.

It really all depends on how a person feels about the device itself. Is it more of a lug to carry around, or isn't it? To me, it's just based on personal preference.

In my case, I like the 15" form factor a lot more than my 17" laptop, and my 17" laptop is the one that carries the most horsepower of them all.

I have a 15.6 laptop - when I bought it 2 years ago there really were few options size wise – the 17'' laptops that I would have preferred, were ugly things that looked as though they belonged to a decade earlier.
As I always intended to use my laptop as a desktop - (I have a tiny compact workstation setup in my kitchen\living area) - the smaller screen sizes had no appeal for me.

    Cheers!

Do you find that 1280 x 800 is a little small for a fifteen-inch display, or are you happy with that resolution?

My 15 inch laptop has a 1680 x 1050 resolution, which I think is great, but some people find it to be too high, so it comes down to personal choice. I had the choice of a high resolution matte screen or a lower resolution glossy one, and I went for the high resolution one. In hindsight maybe I should have tried to find a different laptop with a high resolution glossy screen as I do prefer them to matte screens.

I would never own a 15 inch laptop unless it had a similar resolution, and I think it's a real shame that most 15 inch laptops these days come with a lower resolution than mine. Hopefully now that Apple are making laptop with the so called retina displays (I would never own a Mac though), PC manufacturers will start to release more laptops with high resolution screens.

I have a 15.6 Asus, which I thought looked fine. But I now have turned it into a desktop more or less, with external mouse, keyboard and 24" HP monitor with 1920x1200.

Big (15.6 and above) for desktop replacement and serious work, plus small for convenience (13.3 and below). I currently have a 17.3 inch gaming laptop and 8.9 inch netbook.
