Sorry but no Online Armor is still not Vista compatible but its definitely already on the to-do list.

IPTime router (hoping that the hardware firewall is on...)

Think this is enough... Maybe more than enough? hehe

The setup I use on numerous boxes:

    Avira Premium Security Suite
    WinPatrol Plus
    Acronis True Image 10

Runs light as a feather and never had any malware get on my systems. Also no false positives with Avira contrary to some other's experience.

A bit of an overkill IMO.

I am working on a friends laptop and it has Vista Home Premium. He asked me to install a Firewall and a HIPS program. He wants them to be free and doesn't want a resident AV as he says it slows down the laptop too much. Honestly I don't think he is ready for a computer without a resident AV though. What do you guys think of me installing just Comodo Firewall V3 and BOClean for him?

Mmmh... I would trow in Threatfire into the mix just for good measure! Besides you shouldn't recommend users install beta software for security reasons.

What beta software, both Comodo Firewall V3 and BOClean are final. Also I think ThreadFire with Comodo V3 is overkill.

Oooops... My bad! I had no idea the new Comodo was final...

Please let me retract what I have said as gracefully as a bull in a china shop could retract it's own steps... o_O

Can he handle a hips? It should be easy enough since only new/modified files are asked about after installation.

 LOL I guess he can't handle full featured HIPS yet. He hated how intrusive Comodo Firewall is and I thought it was good having those learning modes. I don't know why people upgrade to Vista, he should have stayed with XP so I could of install Online Armor ;) . Okay second attemp, a more easier interface, I will install PC Tools TreatFire and PC Tools Firewall Plus. I will take some ideas if you have any.... Free is the key though!

Why not just disable Defense+ in Comodo? After that its not so intrusive.

Well I would just leave the Vista Firewall but he isn't behind a router. This PC Tools Firewall and ThreadFire combo ain't that bad. I personally ain't a fan of PC Tools, but good thing this setup is not for me :).

Perhaps anyone can assist me in making some decisions (I clearly can't myself: I'm dazed and confused by all 'security terms' flying around these days - HIPS, IDS, Sandboxes etc.)

I'm quite a paranoid and careful computer user (to say the least  ). I use Firefox for browsing a couple of regular websites each day (not more than 5 or so) and I download from usenet using Newsleecher. On occasion I send/receive some emails, but not much. I use a DVD Profiler for maintaining my DVD collection (this downloads some profiles and images from the internet).

Although my computer is 'clean' at the moment I sometimes get the feeling (probably the paranoia kicking in again) that I'm a sitting duck (perhaps I'm just overreacting).

    Here is my setup:

-WinXP SP2 (all latest updates installed)
    -Modem/router with firewall ON
    -Windows XP Firewall ON
    -NOD32 2.7
-Ad-Aware SE 1.06 (resident, looking for a new program though)
    -MVP Hosts file
    -Firefox 2.0.0.9 with NoScript/AdBlockPlus/CookieSafe

When looking at my 'computer habits', is this enough or should I add some things for protection? I don't think I need to 'fortify' my computer with all kinds of programs, but all advice is welcome and helpful. I'm not really an expert, so please be kind with me in regards to 'complex' programs :doubt: .
