Nice set-up there, trjam. Should serve you well this year.

Though I think you'd be happier using Avira with Sandboxie. You might want to give that a try.

Question. If he tries it, wouldn't that mean he would have broken his word? Because he uninstalled avast! and installed a different AV?

I would like to know that also. Trjam, did you install all the shields with avast ?

o_O I forgot about thunderbolt! Man it is so hard to choose computers these days. Do you think that the low end pro is better vs the low end air? 320GB hdd vs 64 GB SSD? I am unsure about the small amount of space as I want to install Ubuntu 11.04 and/or windows 7 on it as well.

Why would you buy an Air now when they are gonna be refreshed in June to coincide with the release of Mac OS X Lion?
The Pro on the other hand still has a good year before a refresh.
Better wait a few months if possible, or go for the basic Pro.
Personally, I got a MacBook Pro last month and I will sell off mine if the new MacBook Air comes with a back-lit keyboard.

Wow. That is really something. One million views. Thats is simply mind boggling considering the contents of this thread are more like a blog than anything else.

If that's true then it's the best blog the world.
There's no blog in the world that discusses so many different things at the same time like this one!

Looking at the ratio of replies to views, about 65 views take place for every 1 reply. Whatever that means. :)

I think that is a rather "disappointing" setup trjam. I expected something more exciting. Such as only using Prevx 4 Beta, but I do now only realise now that it is Easter Monday and no vendor would release a Beta today. Also I find the choice of Sandboxie quite "boring", a surprise such as using BufferZone in that place would have been nice.
But the above mentioned doesn't mean it is bad security setup ofcourse.

And indeed, did you install all avast! shields?

Does this also mean no Avira or ESET security products on your pc anymore?
I simply don't believe you will keep this setup for the whole year, I am sure you won't be able to resist trying ESET generation 5, Prevx 4 and the new generation of BufferZone.

The coming days I am going to spend on thinking what license I want you to buy me :D.

It's funny how so many people make suggestions of 'better' setups to Trjam. I think we're all doing it because we want free licenses. :D

I and a friend are helping set up a system (WinXP) in a church library. I've been experimenting with LUA + SRP and am pleasantly surprised.
There will be one Adminstrator - the librarian. No other users can make changes to the system.

I tested against the usual attack vectors and nothing gets through,
since LUA protects writing to System Space and SRP prevents executing from User Space.

I wanted to test some live exploits from Malware Domain Lists but my laptop has IE8 and I couldn't get anything to trigger
except this site with an exploit kit, and IE8 invoked DEP:

    DEP.gif

So I gave up and devised some in-house tests to simulate different attack vectors being used in the wild.
There is one real malware - an embedded executable in a RTF document.

    Here are some screenshots:

    http://urs2.net/rsj/computing/tests/srp/index.html

I think this is a very robust security set up -- and it's Default-Deny!

By the way, this year marks the 10th Anniversary of LUA + SRP!

    regards,

    -rich

Yes, I was pretending to tempt him with 'better' security so I'd get free software, guess my little joke wasn't that clear.

I'm surprised his set-up isn't something radically new after the build-up, but he knows what he is doing and it is a good one.:thumb:

Doesnt matter what you think. All that matters is that my toilet flushes.

All shields all 4 computers. One snapshot for each for restore only. Simple but as good as anything else that gets 85 percent of malware. Sandboxie is a must and why pay for a AV.

Yes, in the end it is a really good setup.

So what operating system are you mainly using?
And are you using features like DEP, SEHOP and UAC (if available on your OS)?
