Well, I bit the bullet, took out SSM and am trying ProSecurity 1.30 free. Seems to be running okay now. I don't know if the latest PS 1.30 free protection level is as good as SSM free, but I'll keep it a while and see what happens. I notice it doesn't hook anything, but not sure whether that's necessary or if it matters.

    So, for a few weeks,

    Powershadow
    ProSecurity free
    Snoopfree
    AVG antivirus free
    ASquared free
    Hardware and software firewalls
    RKUnhooker (run occasionally)

I love being the last post(for now). Okay:

    1) AOL AVS
    2) DSA
    3) Powershadow (props to Chuck)
    4) spywareblaster
    5) K-Meleon
    6) Hardware FW

Also, superantispyware and Asquared free on demand. That's it.

    The signature says all.

I decided to give a try to DW (have currently BSODs with BZ 2.5 Beta).

Fast, easy, totally transparent with every day computer use. It well deserves the money. A fantastic complement to any security set!

I have moved my TESTING snapshot to my MAIN now. I just kept and moved Nod32 over from MAIN list. I am no longer running previous list below:

    MAIN

Nod32, Comodo FW Pro, Boclean, Cyberhawk, Geswall,
LinkScanner Pro, RegRun Gold, PeerGaurdian, Hostman

    TESTING

    OA AV+ & FW (161 Beta), Geswall (2.6 Beta2), Boclean, LinkScanner Pro

Previous setup is still saved with a FD-ISR snapshot exported file just in case. I am still deciding to add back Prevx1 and\or Cyberhawk, but it doesn't look like I need them.

    real time additionals:

Cyberhawk "FREE" + EQSecurity! Very nice new defense program. I actually dropped interest in some others i had taken a fancy to like PG & ST lately but will not relenquish my confidence in either.

Must be that "new" sensation of something just a little more different than the ordinary in pc security defense that always has a way of attracting enough interest to force changes.

I have dropped Linkscanner Pro. To be honest, with Geswall, it don't even matter what it blocked. It was just making my surfing too slow due to it checking each link in the search engines. Still using the lower intruded SiteAdvisor Firefox plugin.

Need some help guys... I might be getting Windows Vista over the weekend and I know some of you have it installed or played around with it. Well anyways, can you guys mention what programs work on Vista. I know that Nod32 and some others are already compatible, but what about the regular software most of us use like spyware blaster, spybot, etc? If your not too busy, can you post some that are known to work. I mean I can try each but thought I would same me the time and ask around.

Ive tried teh following security on Vista:

    NOD32
    Kaspersky (AV and IS)
    Jetico PF
Ad Muncher (if u disable UAC or run as admin)
    SUPERAntiSpyware Free

When I tried Vista, Prevx1 was not yet compatible but (now) there is a beta that supposedly works.

Thanks WSFuser! Do you think that adding Nod32 and using that stupid integrated Firewall and Windows Defender is good enough for a temporary period? The firewall is probably outbound though I am behind a firewalled router anyways.

Is there a way to disable Windows Defender though? Sorry I am not to familiar with how Windows Vista works, just what I have read around.

Not sure if it's different with Vista, but this is how you disable it on XP...

Open Windows Defender > Tools > Options > disable "Use real-time protection (recommended)

I personally only use Windows Defender on demand myself. It's active components won't really block any spyware that I've noticed, and the other features my WinPatrol free version is perfectly capable of doing.

If you are behind a hardware firewall/router with NAT & SPI, + "that stupid integrated Firewall", and using Nod32...

it is pretty much a permanent solution, not just temporary. In fact I would say your security is optimal after mixing & matching some anti-spyware programs into the equation as well.

Luciddream you must be kinda new around here but WELCOME to my Thread :D . I am very familiar with XP and other security software and I would assume I would after 1,107 posts in this Thread I started back then. I on the other hand haven't had my hands on Vista yet, so now there is where I need help and yeah I know how to disable the firewall in XP and also how to disable the security center crap. Thanks for your attempt to help. By the way Windows Defender sucks, but a better alternative is SuperAntispyware like WSFuser said, and others use Spyware Terminator as well.

just search for secuirty centre in the search box.
you should then by able to disable the windows defender from there.
i have had a quick look at vista at college and the secuirty was in control panel like in xp and there was a windows defender disable button.
