    This is not my security setup, rather a family member's who borrowed a laptop, and the security was very poor, using an Administrator account, without any need.

    So, what did I do?

    1 - Created a standard user account (LUA);
    2 - Activated UAC, set to maximum;
    3 - Installed Microsoft Security Essentials;
    4 - Installed AVG LinkScanner
    5 - Installed Spybot - Search & Destroy (Immunization only.) + Spyware Blaster

    I also have installed Sandboxie, and I'll be creating a few videos explaining how to work with it, and also how to use Spyware Blaster and Spybot.

    I'll be taking a look at AppLocker, since this laptop has Windows 7 Ultimate. It would be stupid not to make use of such.

    It's a light and a non-intrusive layered security.

    Edit: I'll also be thinking if will advise them to use Chromium browser (with my settings) under Sandboxie, rather than IE. IE will be for banking.

    Oh, DEP is on. ;) Forgot to mention that. I'll check to see whether or not SEHOP is active. Thanks for the reminder.

    Hey, maybe you know if there are problems with any software, especially games when running with full DEP? Have you experienced any? I'm thinking since it's a built-in feature it'd be a waste to not take use of it. ;)

    Hello,

    I took a look at DEP and it only is activated for Windows related processes.

    Also, since this laptop isn't mine and no game is installed, of course I won't install any without consent, and it's also a very basic laptop, and any decent game would run very slow. So, there's no way for me to tell you if any issues would happen with games. I'm sure others will let you know, if they have DEP fully enabled and play games.

    Later I may see whether or not it works fine with other processes. As you say, why not make use of it in its full power.

    Regards

    Edit: By the way, I thought Defense+ offered such protection?

    I'm still confirming if I can get CIS working on my comp. Lately it's been causing VERY weird problems for me, so that's why I'm asking about DEP. :D If you want I'll name a few examples in detail. :p :D

    :D The old free 2.1 version for Opera has a lisence agreement which does not allow changing the program code. By simply editing two xml files (amclient and clientdefs) I was able to unlock the firewall option, the tag file (the deny execute) of newprograms, the sandboxing of usb sticks and change the executable being sandboxed (chrome in stead of opera). Strictly to the letter I did not change the code of teh program, but only changed some external configuration tables (xml files). It is legally on the edge, but the give away of the day was also only one year valid. On my play PC I only use freeware :D

    Note I even managed to unlock the Virtual Desktop feature, but I do not use that

    Uninstalled Malware Defender and waiting a official release of it, because the current version blocks my internet and also causes BSoD every time i start it again (Example: i shut it down just to do some things and then when i start it again it throws a BSoD every single time o_O)

    Updated Windows XP Pro SP3 [Limited User Account] No realtime AV
    (SRP/DEP/ACL)

    Deny All autostart locations + the rest runs as Limited User.

    Realtime:

    On-Demand:

    Browsers: (ACL Protection/LUA)
    • Google Chrome (--safe-plugins -incognito)
    • Internet Explorer 8 (All security levels set to high)

    Very Light and Stable.

    Q: Windows Defender needed or not?

    Keep in mind, ask yourself, 'where are you browsing, wilders and youtube?', 'do you even insert other people's USBs?', 'do you install much unknown software?', 'do others even use your PC'?

    A lot of people here (I imagine) browse the same safe sites all day, don't insert anyone's USB into their system, don't install much software, or let anyone use their system.

    But a lot of people here are preparing for these 'WWII malware events' that won't ever happen because of their strict knowledge, routines and how they use their pc. But these same people may be installing so much security software they're defeating the purpose of a fast processor and lots of memory and their system is churning like an old amstrad pc.

    Some food for thought. Please continue! ;)

    My guess is that it isn't getting along with PC Tools Firewall. I had similar problems with MD and Outpost Firewall.

    Once bitten, twice shy I guess.

    Running KIS 2011 Beta 11.0.0.229 here on 7 x64, good times.

    EDIT: v11.0.0.231 now lol -- they're churning out these builds quick!

    Going for a minimalistic setup. Yet it's more secure than most other setups out there. :D
