I did the opposite. I have the firewall (inbound/outbound) enabled in DW. I also leave the Windows XP firewall on (as per Ilya). I have the firewall disabled in MD. If I am going to be away from the computer for any length of time I switch MD to silent mode, enable all protections and lock user interface (password protected). Since I don't create any permanent rules in MD for network protection it sort of locks the computer.

Well if they aren't running in real-time I can see that. My real question is why?

Layered protection. Different programs take care of different risks. There isn't one single app that covers everything.

I'm all about layered protection ,I have CIS AV, ClamAV, MBAM & SAS (2 real-time, 2 on-demand) but 6 on-demand scanners? You seem to be satisfied with that but don't you figure you have some major overlap there?

Sometimes less is more. You have so much kernel hooking going on there, that the moment you do hit some serious malware none of your protections may work. The potential for hidden conflict between all these applications, regardless of whether they are running realtime or on-demand is enormous...giving you a real false sense of security. Safetyfirst may just have turned into safetylast.:cautious:

    On-demand scanners are there for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and nth opinion... :D

Sure, there is some overlapping, but none of them covers everything.

We can agree to disagree, as already discussed here and here. Pay special attention to the expert's post.

    So far so good. :)

I trust in God, common sense, safe hex, and if all of these fail, my up-to-date on-demand scanner is there to save my a**.

My system is clean and has been for quite some time now. I figure if it's already clean and I have good prevention (FW, resident AV, D+ etc.), with a little common sense it should stay that way. If it doesn't I have a FEW scanners to tell me so. If you have faith in yourself and your (proactive) security setup, you shouldn't need 72 scanners. That being said, if you like them and like playing with software, fine, to each their own. But 6 on-demand?....o_O :D

What exactly do you see as so problematic in my setup (be as specific as possible, please)?

Paranoid as I am (having all these security apps to protect me), I am starting to believe there is some numerological conspiracy going on here... :ninja:

With this number 72 that keeps haunting me through these posts, I feel like I need some more security software... :ouch:

If I could only know if it comes from the bright or from the dark side... :gack:

:D I don't know about a conspiracy, I guess you and your 720 scanners just intrigue us. You're kinda like an oddity behind a glass wall that we're trying to figure out. So we tap on the glass and say "why does he have all of those scanners? There must be 7,272 of them!":D

i just want to inform everyone that i received an email today which i already know that it is a virus because the attached file is an zip and inside there is an exe file and its telling that my facebook account password is changed and open the attached file to see the new password.

as i scan these on an online scanner here is the result.

~ Virus Total Results Removed per Policy ~

well from seeing the results you can ask yourself now if your security setup really protects you or not since the major known security software did not even protected you from this virus like Eset,Avast,a aquared and especially avira.

yah some people will say their firewall or hips will protect them but if you can imagine one of your family is using your computer and your hips pop up a message or firewall for sure the newbies will just click allow and do damage on your computer then your security setup is bypassed!
