where did you download that? let us know your experience when you used it

  3. SRP, Avira, and Softperfect Firewall, with Opera as my browser and Macrium Reflect for backup. A few registry tweaks (most notably disabling autorun) and that's it.

Use SRP to restrict to basic user or deny all other drive letters that might be used for USB devices. Use Panda USB Vaccine to stop the creation of autoruns on any/all drives.

SoftPerfect, I have used it a lot in the past. Only downfall to it IMO is that when in rules wizard mode, and it waits for you to create the rule, all network activity is blocked. I like it better when only traffic for that specific rule is blocked but other rules are still allowed. You can also make your own rules via .xml faster than you can with the UI if you understand it.

Don't forget as well that when you use the Basic User option with SRP in XP, of course you are admin, but your "user" who is an admin is the owner if many things. Going through the file system and registry to remove your "user" ownership and instead granting it to the "group" admins is a great thing. A bit of a pain, but if "you" are the owner, and "you" start something as a user, "you" still have full rights to those objects.

There is a registry tweak to make all new items owned by the "group" admins, but I never found it to work that well for some reason.

    Sul.

Windows firewall in vista and 7 can be configured with advanced settings. Otherwise windows 7 firewall control works well.

With a-squared hijackfree, you can view connections in real-time, just like a firewall, but even better, you can kill processes (and those making connections) and quarantine them if necessary.

Some people are using advanced firewalls, answering many prompts a day, but ask them what they've blocked, and they might say they have only blocked windows media player from connecting and adobe from updating. If you've blocked a million programs, what on earth are you installing I say? Don't get me wrong, I see the benefit in firewalls, but I've monitored my system, use sandboxie, nothing's happening. lol :)

Personally, I don't mind windows media player and adobe updating. Secunia usually gets me to update it anyway.

On old XP SP3 laptop with only 512mb RAM and 1.2ghz processor:

KIS2010 with highest scan settings but scans only new and changed and only then on execution. Browsers and P2P set to Safe Run (sandbox)

On Vista Home Premium laptop with 2GB RAM and 1.8ghz processor:

Vipre Premium (Twitter give away) with Firewall in learning mode and Zemana AL (Softpedia give away). Not bad for free.

On Vista Home Premium laptop with 4GB RAM and 2.5 ghz processor:

    OA++ and Sandboxie

All 32 bit machines and running fine and lite for now. The Zemana/Vipre combo is new but giving it a go. MD, Prevx and A2 licences currently unused. IMO the OA++ and Sandboxie combo is just about unbeatable but sticking with the others for now. Anyway it gives me more to play with!

Oh yeah and all run Firefox with Adblock Plus and Better Privacy among others and all have MBAM as a 2nd opinion scanner.

    Cheers

Hey thats pretty good OA++ and sandboxie. I never thought of that one. OA++ and geswall free would kinda be similar right? That wouldn't be bad either.

The original poster for this thread dja2k among others use OA and SBIE. I guess (no pun intended) Geswall free would work just as well as long as its only browsers you want to protect. I use SBIE for browsers, P2P, Media Players, removable media/drives, e-mail clients and more!

    Cheers

Of course it is,you just reformatted it :argh:

As much as you change security setups, your registry gets so much junk and leftovers,it's no wonder you have to reformat ;)
