    Thats a very interesting setup.

    #1.
Have you Threatfire set up to alert on outbound connections ?
    #2
How have you set up the OpenDNS ?
    #3
Do you have an OpenDNS account or just use the 2 DNS servers in your windows settings ?

    1. I don't have TF to alert me on outbound connections. Why? If legit software that I use wants to go out, I see no reason to not let them do that as otherwise I can't trust the usage of them at all. Secondly, I'll use a quote of my own from another forum regarding threats: "Outbound protection? Once malware has come into your system, you don't know what it can do. If it really wants to bypass your outbound protection - it eventually will somehow."

On #2 and 3: I've an account at OpenDNS and have set up the settings just like I want, incl. the default phishing protection, botnet protection and adware protection.

Re the threatfire question , you can set up a custom rule to alert you to this.

Its a interesting point about trusting the program...
I would be very much in agreement with this in so far as damaging my system or even stealing data.
But I've seen apps which should have no reason to be making internet connections , making them.
And I didn't like it. But its way down my list of priorities now and don't have any outbound control in place myself right now.

Do you think of OpenDNS as fulfilling some of the role of a Firewall in terms of inbound connections ?

I appreciate your post and respect your thoughts - I've had the same things crossing my mind.

Now that I think about it, I would say that O-DNS fills a gap in the opposite way actually; outbound. The reason would be because of its Botnet protection, which at least I understand as preventing such dangerous connections from going out of your system - correct me if I'm wrong. Most of all I see O-DNS as an overall boost in malware prevention and makes surfing more convenient in several ways.

Incompatibilities spotted in my "planned" setup... ThreatFire most suspected as the same lockups were experienced on my previous OS installation (I've reformatted to see if lockups were solved - now I know it's caused by software) and so on. Thinking through alternatives...

Haha! I simply don't get why that happens! It never did before. :D On top of that, now I've experienced that Windows Defender causes delays in certain situations - starting Spotify is one. Everytime I start Spotify, at least on the taskbar, cause that's where I always start it from, the area (taskbar) will not react for like 6 seconds to other actions, like starting other objects in Quick Launch for example. Every-single-time. What can I choose from now!? :D I'm open for ideas that I can think through, but the thing is I really liked those two primarily policy-based software (at least TF was, and WD becomes that at the same time when setting it up) - how they operated. Truth is that delays, lockups and slowdowns can't be tolerated in my case and I'm sure everyone else thinks the same. :doubt:

    I know :) . I liked TF a lot too. Haven't found another BB that I like !

I guess on my setup AE 2.2 is kinda of an ( extreme ) policy based security.
I like its reliabilty , and that its easy to understand.
I can then figure out if it would work or not when reading about new threats.

Absolutely - AE is a solid way to go, but it's simply not an approach that suits me personally. :)

What can I say... Norton suits me and after thinking for some time I came to the conclusion that it would be the best choice for me for the time being. :)

OMG! NAV2010 beta was what delayed the shutdown process (without causing unresponsiveness) - when are these weird problems going to end!? :D I'll see if the newest build of NAV solved it - the reboot that I did, seeing this odd issue again, was so that the updated build would be completely applied (it comes through the built-in updater for testing purposes).

    Re Dekart private disk.
Thanks for asking , I've been hoping someone would take an interest in it sometime :)
It sets up an encrypted folder.
I just keep personal files in it , more of an archive than anything else.

Helps against data theft risk over internet , or if laptop was stolen.
Its a slight inconvenience to use , but I use it very rarely , so its a good trade off for me.

I got this version free of a magazine years ago , an open source program these days would do just as good or prob better.
